The action of the medicine

The main active substance of the drug is latanoprost. It is an analog of prostaglandin, a hormone-like substance contained in the tissues of a living organism. Prostaglandins are synthesized in the cartilaginous tissue, in the vessels, in the muscles. They participate in the metabolism, and above all, in the regulation of blood pressure.

Latanoprost easily penetrates through the cornea, where hydrolysis occurs. As a result of complex chemical reactions, an active acid is formed, which has a medicinal effect.

Further, the main component of Xalatan affects the intraocular pressure, contributing to the correct distribution of the intraocular fluid. The reason for increasing eye pressure is an excessive amount of moisture in some places and a disadvantage in others. Using Xalatan, the patient achieves a uniform “pouring” of the liquid, while not reducing its number.

Indications

Intraocular pressure is the main cause of the appearance of a formidable disease, glaucoma. Therefore, patients suffering from glaucoma become the primary consumers of drops of Xalatan.

It is important to make a distinction between those who have an open-ended disease and a closed-angle disease. In the first case, drops help well. In the second the drug is either not prescribed at all, or with great care, because with this disease the primary task is to achieve a reduction in moisture production. Otherwise, it is collected in one corner and can cause the pressure to rise to critical numbers.

Drops, getting inside (they penetrate through the cornea), reduce the intraocular pressure due to the outflow of moisture.

Application

Drops should be instilled once a day (not more often). An increase in the frequency of instillation not only does not enhance the curative effect but can have directly opposite consequences: intraocular pressure will increase.
