About Trileptal

Trileptal is an anticonvulsant. The drug effectively affects joints and muscles, relieving epileptic seizures, as well as other symptoms and signs of epilepsy.

The drug is used in monotherapy for the complex treatment of epilepsy. Medication can be prescribed for young patients, even for one-month-old. After oral internal administration, the drug is quickly absorbed and distributed to the tissues of the body.

The maximum concentration of the drug is reached after five hours after administration. At the same time, food does not affect the absorption and the rate of distribution of the drug. The drug can penetrate into the bloodstream, so it often becomes the cause of the manifestation of adverse reactions of the body from all systems of vital activity of the body.

Besides, the medication penetrates the placenta and into the breast milk, so you should not take the medicine for women during the period of bearing the baby and feeding the baby naturally. The metabolism of the drug occurs in the liver. The drug is excreted through the kidneys with urine. The time required to remove the drug is between two and three hours.

In elderly patients, the time to reach the maximum concentration, as well as the time to remove the drug, is significantly increased. However, such patients do not need a dose adjustment in the smaller direction. Correction is necessary only for kidney diseases. Children can be prescribed a drug, starting with one month.

Composition and form of release

The medication is produced in the form of tablets, which are intended for oral internal administration. Tablets can be 150, 300 and 600 mg. Also, the medication is released in the form of a thick solution, which is also used orally.

Indications for use

Medication is recommended for use with the following health problems:

  • epileptic seizures of any complexity and form in adults and children aged one month;
  • tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children over the age of two.

Method and features of application

Take the pill orally with plenty of drinking water. If it is difficult to take the whole tablet, it can be divided into two parts. The drug can be taken at any time. Children younger than three years, as well as patients who are hard to swallow solid forms of the drug, may use Trileptal in the form of a solution.

Start taking medication with a small dose, no more than twice a day. Then the dosage is gradually increased, depending on the reaction of the body to the drug. The recommended initial dosage is 600 mg per day. Then the dosage is gradually increased, but not more than 600 mg per week. Thus, the medicine is taken until the necessary therapeutic effect is obtained. Do not exceed the dosage of 2400 mg per day.

If you need to stop taking the drug, then you need to do this gradually, you can not abruptly stop using it. It is necessary to gradually reduce the dosage until complete withdrawal. The medication is not recommended for patients who are less than a month old since there is no information on the effect of the medication on infants of this age.

Elderly patients need a dosage adjustment only if they suffer from kidney disease. Patients suffering from the liver disease in mild form do not require special forms of drug use.

    Trileptal for Depression

    After recurring depressions, – Actually always triggered by external influences: private reasons (loss of loved ones, illnesses) Situational (single parent, 3 children, Hartz IV supported, confrontation with the authorities, extreme stress by double burden: job and family), also Sessionalbedingt ago Citalopram was prescribed to me especially in spring / march, and partly also before Christmas. Compatibility really ok. The manic phases did not decrease as a result. But at least I did not have Depris anymore. Due to the recurring manic phases: hyperactive, insomnia, sleep deficit, loss of food ‘out of balance’ with a lot of coffee and occasionally also cigarette consumption, I had exhausted myself physically so that nothing went, up to phobias. Fear of leaving home, confrontational anxiety with other people, unable to cope with household, etc. Then Trileptal was prescribed to me to create a mood balance. Was really ok … first. The feeling of seeing life more through a window increased. Not to be real anymore! Stress as described above could not harm me anymore. I stood so to speak ‘off the mark’. It did not affect me directly, so I could handle it calmly and thoughtfully. Not my thing! Lately I have felt extremely flatulence and fullness with unpleasant pressure in the upper abdomen, more aggressive behavior, shortness of breath, extreme hot flashes (no Menosymtome !, dry mouth, increased tinnitus, restlessness in general, extreme difficulty concentrating, sometimes very poor short-term memory, severe headache, nausea all the way vomiting with dizziness and now even rash, which makes everything even worse, since I can not sleep at all! The first months of taking Citalopram in combination with Trileptal were really ok … but after I now feel these side effects , I would like to drop the Trileptal again, I just took 600mg so far, 300mg each in the evening and in the morning Citalopram I take 20mg and I had no problems!
