How promethazine works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of promethazine.
Please also read the information on the drug classes H1-antihistamines, neuroleptics, antiallergic drugs, to which the active ingredient promethazine belongs.

Areas of application of the active substance promethazine

Promethazine is used differently due to its diverse mode of action.

On the one hand, it is prescribed for allergic diseases (allergies) to suppress allergic reactions such as watery eyes, runny nose or asthma attacks with shortness of breath, rash, redness and itching of the skin as well as diarrhea.

On the other hand, promethazine is used for basic psychiatric disorders (psychoses), in particular for the relief of agitation and agitation or anxiety disorders. Promethazine can be administered in this context as a single agent or in combination with other drugs from the group of psychotropic drugs.

Promethazine’s soothing and calming action is also used for anesthesia preparation to relieve the patient of the fear of surgery.

Ultimately, the drug can also be used to treat nausea and vomiting or sleep disorders. However, for this purpose, less side-effect-rich therapeutic trials should be undertaken beforehand.

For the following application areas of Promethazine , in-depth information is available:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • sleep
  • allergy
  • psychosis
  • anxiety disorders

How promethazine works

The active substance promethazine is a H 1 antihistamine with a strong soothing (sedative) effect. It is therefore mainly used as a means of treating allergies and as a sedative (sedative) for the relief of sleep disorders use.

The messenger histamine triggers the symptoms that occur in an allergy. Mostly it is inflammatory complaints (watery and itchy eyes, redness and itching of the skin, runny nose, but also diarrhea). Histamine is transported via the bloodstream to different regions of the body. Promethazine occupies the binding sites of the histamine (H1 receptors) in the body. As a result, the histamine can no longer develop its effect in the body and the allergic reactions remain. Promethazine also occupies the binding sites in the brain. This makes it reassuring and sleep-inducing.

Promethazine continues to be able to inhibit the effect of the body’s own messenger dopamine. Therefore, it is simultaneously assigned to the weakly effective neuroleptics. Due to its dopamine-inhibiting effect restlessness and anxiety disorders, as they often occur in connection with a psychosis, dampened.

Promethazine stimulates salivation and intestinal activity via its influence on the messenger acetylcholine, which is why it can be used effectively for nausea and vomiting.

    Promethazine for Depression; Sleep disorders

I am 49 years old, have depris and fibromyalgia. Should take because of both diseases Cymbalta. It looks great, has a lot less pain and I’m not so close to everything anymore. I am much calmer. However, I sleep very badly and often sweat as mad. Always look blurry and can read badly. I do not know if it’s related to the pills or my age. To fall asleep I take Promathezin it helps me very well. My big problem I’ve gained 5 kg, which then makes me Depris. I’m not slim anyway. I do sports 2-3 times a week and watch the food, but nothing happens.

    Promethazine for Depression; Sleep disorders

Promethazine 50mg the first 2 weeks daily, hardly any effect (easy rest) got it as a tranquilizer in cannabis and extasy withdrawal. Adrenaline rushes (crashing, screaming) remained. I could sleep better! thanks zyprexa! From the third week it helped slowly. I was always calm and happy. Have it discontinued when it was me after 4 weeks too little effect, for a tablet. In acute attacks, I take the Tavor 2.0 the immediately for a few hours and then I fall asleep quickly. if I take promethazin 50mg in healthy condition now I’ll sleep fast and well. Dazed. When I also smoked one I get horror hallus, but they were funny because you are fully conscious if you want but you can sleep right away if it gets too violent. after 3 weeks horror dreams, very real. Attention, otherwise good for in between, in the long run not recommended.

    Side effects: Unrest

I got Atosil (promethazine) as drops for oral use in sleep disorders and for sedation. About 25-40 minutes after taking the dose, I noticed an uncomfortable feeling in my legs. This condition caused me to have to constantly move my legs. The drug released symptoms of restless legs syndrome. In higher dosages, I had to tense and relax my whole body including facial muscles. My girlfriend said I had seizures all night. I do not remember myself. The next morning I was totally beside the track and ran around a robot. For me, promethazine is extremely paradoxical.

    Promethazine for Unrest

At the beginning of the intake, there was no evidence of side effects. With continued use, however, steadily increasing muscle pain (needle-like) occurred permanently. It then came a permanent neck headache which led to dizziness, double vision and unbearable nausea. I then discontinued the medication.

    Side effects: Nausea; Headache; Dizziness

In the first two weeks of use, I occasionally had slight pressure in the head and dry mouth. For about 10 days I had a very unsafe behavior, anxiety. Now after 7 weeks, I’m doing quite well with these drugs, the only thing that occasionally occurs is heavy sweating at night.

    Promethazine for Depression

Citalopram I take again after an unsuccessful attempt at weaning for 2 weeks. 30mg in the morning. I have a strong inner restlessness which often leads to anxiety attacks. Further dizziness, loss of appetite, stomach ache, listlessness, weakness, loss of libido, blurred vision, tremors. I hope that will be over soon …. is already getting better! I have been taking promethazine since my withdrawal. 25mg bb. Usually 1 is enough, if there is nothing more. NW dry mouth, tiredness …. but fatigue is more helpful when you’re at 180000 all day. N`bissl gaga in the head I am too.

Promethazine for Borderline; Depression; Sleep disorders

I got the drug in a clinic instead of my previously taken sleeping pills (crescent moon). In this respect, a somewhat strange replacement. About an hour after taking (2 tablets), I was like switched off. My sentences were getting shorter and shorter and I’m in the bathroom at a snail’s pace, barely enough energy to brush my teeth. I could not imagine a sedative effect until the next day. But for weight gain, about 3 kilos in 10 weeks and slightly bloated tissue. Even more, however, have irritated me the word-finding disorders. Initially, there were reversed initials, e.g. Spleen pencil instead of felt-tip pen – later I was missing more and more sentences. For me, this development was so frightening that I now just crawl this drug on my own and instead take back my at least felt harmless SChlaftabletten.

    Promethazine for Borderline; Sleep disorders

Take Promethazine now for a little over two months, because I have not slept because of violent panic attacks. In the beginning I took about 20 drops and then I was able to sleep well. Meanwhile, I take about 35 and most of the time I still do not sleep, then after some time I take another 35 and can then sleep most of the time. The casting time is about an hour for me, rather something more. If I do not sleep enough after that, I’m hungover in the morning. Actually, I do not feel any side effects except that my muscles go quite loose when I take the medication.

*** General *** Promethazine is used as a sedative and in sleep disorders. It also helps against allergies. *** Personal Experiences *** I take promethazine because of sleep disorders caused by a potraumatic stress disorder. I take it for 8 months but only when needed and lately increasingly rare. It helps quickly to fall asleep without having big side effects. I would recommend it.

    Promethazine for Borderline; Depression

So far, good effect … After the second week in the morning shaking and strong nausea, and severe vomiting … Am then in the emergency room because the weekend was … High-dose Vomex A, and MCP by drip, and plenty of electrolyte and sodium chloride solution. .. After 3 hours I went again blindingly. Fortunately, this type of nausea / nausea has not occurred … Perhaps the alcohol of the previous evening …, Or perhaps the Chinese food I ate the day before. Up to now I have intense dreams at night, from time to time stronger palpitations … Increased sweating, from time to time high spirits … On the one hand drive-enhancing, but sometimes tiredness feeling … slight tremor … Sometimes feeling cold and cold extremities Often yawning and increased flatulence … From time to time after taking a slight tingling in the stomach (aircraft in the stomach) 17.dez.07 The NW of Trevilor are gone, except cold extremities, increased sweating and sometimes a druppgefühl and enlarged pupils … By and large, I am calmer than before, the anxiety has improved and I have a good antidepressant effect … My grudge addiction is minimized and I can relax more. I have self-confidence again and that feels really great as already mentioned above good effect … I take the side effects so far gladly … January 16th, 2008 Trevilor was dosed to 150mg. Had today very good mood and no problems / NW regarding the dose increase … In the spring of 2008 Trevilor outgrown, after 42-36 hrs. After the last minimal intake began power surges and dizziness in the head. These were completely gone after 4-6 weeks. But was very uncomfortable, work was a bit hard for me during this time. I feel the same as before, not happier, and not depressed … But in the long run, I was not interested in being drupp as I had partially overestimated myself on Trevilor. But on the whole it felt great I felt great and strong … promethazine when needed for reassurance and sleep problems

Promethazine for Obsessive compulsive disorder; Sleep disorders

I’ve been taking Sertraline over obsessive thoughts for six months now. I am happy and happy about my decision because my life has become more bearable. When I researched SSRI on the Internet, almost all the reports were negative. I almost never started Sertraline because I was too busy. Luckily I dared to. I’m struggling with some side effects, but I take it for granted that my obsessions are not that bad anymore. I got nervous about Sertralin. At first, I had difficulty falling asleep. On the other hand, I now take Promethazine when needed. At first I was often tired and nervous at the same time. I noticed that my hands often tremble. I sweat heavily and often have diarrhea. Nevertheless, I would always choose the Sertralin again.
