How promethazine works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of promethazine.
Please also read the information on the drug classes H1-antihistamines, neuroleptics, antiallergic drugs, to which the active ingredient promethazine belongs.

Areas of application of the active substance promethazine

Promethazine is used differently due to its diverse mode of action.

On the one hand, it is prescribed for allergic diseases (allergies) to suppress allergic reactions such as watery eyes, runny nose or asthma attacks with shortness of breath, rash, redness and itching of the skin as well as diarrhea.

On the other hand, promethazine is used for basic psychiatric disorders (psychoses), in particular for the relief of agitation and agitation or anxiety disorders. Promethazine can be administered in this context as a single agent or in combination with other drugs from the group of psychotropic drugs.

Promethazine’s soothing and calming action is also used for anesthesia preparation to relieve the patient of the fear of surgery.

Ultimately, the drug can also be used to treat nausea and vomiting or sleep disorders. However, for this purpose, less side-effect-rich therapeutic trials should be undertaken beforehand.

For the following application areas of Promethazine , in-depth information is available:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • sleep
  • allergy
  • psychosis
  • anxiety disorders

How promethazine works

The active substance promethazine is a H 1 antihistamine with a strong soothing (sedative) effect. It is therefore mainly used as a means of treating allergies and as a sedative (sedative) for the relief of sleep disorders use.

The messenger histamine triggers the symptoms that occur in an allergy. Mostly it is inflammatory complaints (watery and itchy eyes, redness and itching of the skin, runny nose, but also diarrhea). Histamine is transported via the bloodstream to different regions of the body. Promethazine occupies the binding sites of the histamine (H1 receptors) in the body. As a result, the histamine can no longer develop its effect in the body and the allergic reactions remain. Promethazine also occupies the binding sites in the brain. This makes it reassuring and sleep-inducing.

Promethazine continues to be able to inhibit the effect of the body’s own messenger dopamine. Therefore, it is simultaneously assigned to the weakly effective neuroleptics. Due to its dopamine-inhibiting effect restlessness and anxiety disorders, as they often occur in connection with a psychosis, dampened.

Promethazine stimulates salivation and intestinal activity via its influence on the messenger acetylcholine, which is why it can be used effectively for nausea and vomiting.

Promethazine for Post-traumatic stress disorder; Depression

Promethazine (50 mg tablets) or Atosil (drops), I personally tolerated very well. Side effects did not occur with me. In a close acquaintance it came to tingle leg but after a while after the Einnhame again laid down. A dependency, as it often occurs with other drugs of this kind, I can not notice with both drugs. A complete discontinuation was possible without any complications. Caution should be exercised in the liquid form with promethazine, as it is quite fast acting and affects vision (blurred vision in writing, for example).

    Promethazine for Social phobia

I have been taking promethazine-neuraxpharm (drops) for several months and as an emergency medication Tavor Expidet (lorazepam) I should take Promethazine before going to bed in the evening. Only from a dose of 20 drops do I notice slight tiredness. Often I need 30-50 drops until a calming effect occurs. Promethazine is great for falling asleep, but it does not help in situations of anxiety or panic. It calms down when you are alone. I got prescribed Tavor Expidet as an emergency medicine. First, 1mg tablets. These did not work for me, so I increased the dose to 2.5mg. That did not help either. Finally, I have the dose previously increased to 5mg once (which scares me, as this is already a very high dose). There was definitely a feeling of relaxation. Whether this is good in the long run, I can not say at this time. My main problem is that in the presence of other people, my hands start to shake extremely. I can not find any side effects, except for the fatigue in promethazine. The addictiveness of Tavor I can not exist so far, because this has not shown any effect on me.

    Promethazine for Unrest

Hello! My experience with promethazine neuraxpharm 50 mg has been quite successful so far. I take this medication for strong arousal, restlessness, as well as anxiety and sleep disorders. I take 4 times 50 mg promethazine in the evening. Since the beginning of the intake, I immediately felt that it helps me a lot. I am not so under pressure and excited. It also helps me to sleep. All the people who are doing alike should try Promethazine neuraxpharm 50 mg. Although I have not taken this medication for a very long time (7 weeks), it has helped me immediately! I felt much better and the symptoms were gone. Side effects are of course associated with every drug. But until today, my side effects of promethazine were not very stressful. At the beginning of the intake, I was a little bit dizzy in the morning and flattened … but in the course of time, that’s why not exactly to the fatigue, which in turn is good, if you also suffer from sleep disorders. The dose should perhaps be as low as possible, that is, first with 50 mg promethazine neuraxpharm 50 mg at the beginning of the intake. In addition, my experience, I would take the drug in the evening, because then you can sleep better and come to rest. But also because I realized that when I morning / noon took the drug, have been much flatter and more dazed. Therefore, I prefer to take my suggestion in the evening, as the effect lasts well beyond the night and thus one is not so tired in the morning. Would be looking forward to feedback !! LG affected

Take sertraline for about one and a half years now in the high dosage 150 mg / day. The effect has gradually improved, reaching its peak after about 4 months, which has since then continued. For decades, compulsive thoughts and social anxiety as well as depressive moods have almost completely improved. Even initial side effects have diminished over time. So, the only side effect of sertraline is a sleep disorder, but I have it with promethazine under control.

    Promethazine for Psychosis; Sleep disorders

On my last entry, because of my paranoid schizophrenia, I was regularly injected with Risperdal Consta every 14 days. What was discontinued due to the strong side effects. Now I get Amisulprid Hexal 100 mg tablets, which I have to take every 2 days. I have not noticed any side effects yet. Because of my insomnia, I now get Promethazine neuraxpharm 50 mg, but they do not help me, I keep awake. As an adjunct drug, I get zopiclone neuraxpharm, this sleeping drug makes me sleep. The side effects of the sleeping pills are that the next day I do not get active until very late at lunchtime and feel like I’m in a drowsy state all day long.

Hello. Have never noticed that before but when I take now Atosil (promethazine) I get an hour later, severe blurred vision, everything is blurred and everything is totally out of focus. I do not mean to be too cumbersome when sleeping, but if you do not want to go to bed right now, it’s quite a hindrance. Do you have that too? Do you lie down then? greeting

Promethazine for Post-traumatic stress disorder; Mood swings; Stress; Borderline; Depression; Sleep disorders

For about 2 years I get (with a short break) promethazine (currently 50mg). The dose may be too low, because until I get tired it takes hours, fears hardly go away and the restlessness is not gone quickly. But when I calm down and calm down, sleep is generally reasonably good, and sometimes very good. Citalopram I get for about 1 year, currently 15mg (were times 10mg, sometimes 20mg). Compatibility is actually quite good, but I do not really know if it really is because of the drug, that sometimes I feel a little better, or if it is simply because psychotherapy is making progress. Sometimes I still have my break-ins, as well as the mood swings. Tavor I get only as an emergency drug, then in 1-2mg. It usually brings an improvement and the side effects are not more important than the effect, but it is not really recommended because it has addictive potential. If only in emergency situations and not permanently! For people with addictive problems sometimes less suitable, where I also have a phlebotomy addictive, but which does not necessarily refer to addiction-promoting remedies. Remestan sometimes works after hours, sometimes not at all – depending on the tension and restlessness, I still do not sleep or not sleep much. For some people, it may be useful to know that it has somehow sensory side effects (weird mouthfeel, other sensations are somehow different), but this is not important to me as long as it works and the side effects are not threatening, no permanent damage leave behind or even deadly.

I could barely walk, but then disappeared after 2 weeks and my general condition has improved … but when I wanted to sell my medication .. also the Trevilor I got really severe weaning symptoms such as vomiting, headaches, circulatory problems and the depression came again. I’ll take the medicine again now.

Great emergency tranquilizer. It is an alternative to Valium and Co., whose dependency potential probably everyone knows. The dosing question, I can only say: maximum 1mg / kg body weight. Then you are pharmacologically on the safe side. It is actually a very old antihistamine with a strong sedative side effect, today actually already belongs to the neuroleptics and is a phenothiazine. Disadvantage (like almost every sedative, depending on the dose slight problems the next morning (concentration, drive …). No primary addictive potential!

    Side effects: Listlessness; Dizziness

I’ve had good experiences with promethazine, use it for daytime (doxepin in the evenings) against anxiety and panic. In spite of 95kg of body weight usually 7-8 drops are sufficient in connection with relaxation exercises, a walk or similar. to reduce the anxiety that you normally get through the day. If I take the medium higher doses over a day, I get a shit mood no matter where you feel less joy. Promethazine has no real abuse potential and it can also be sold without problems in the low dosages. I think it is a good remedy, especially the drops, as they can be dosed so that you (as I said) quite well through the day but not running around like Prince Valium. As a sleep aid it does not work so well for me, makes it tired from 30-40mg but then occur more side effects.
