Application of the active substance mesalazine
Mesalazine is used in inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The aim of the treatment is to heal the inflammation and alleviate the symptoms it causes: pain and diarrhea.
Melsalazine can be given either by taking it in the form of tablets or by introducing it into the intestine in the form of suppositories, rectal foam or clysters.
More detailed information is available on the following Mesalazin application areas:
- chronic inflammatory bowel disease
Mode of action of mesalazine
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease suffer from severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. Typically, the disorders are not uniform. There are periods of intense inflammatory activity and severe discomfort with interim periods in which patients are almost symptom free. In the affected persons strongly increased concentrations of endogenous inflammation-promoting substances such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes and interleukins are to be found in the intestinal mucous membranes.
Like all active substances from the group of aminosalicylates, mesalazine blocks the production of these inflammatory mediators and thus has an anti-inflammatory effect. With the drug, the symptoms can be combated in an acute phase of the disease, but it can also prevent relapses in seizure-free time.
Because mesalazine is not absorbed into the rest of the body, it only works locally in the gut and has few side effects.

Pentasa for Ulcerative colitis
Suffering for 7 years from this inscrutable disease. I started with Claversalzäpfchen. Soon no longer tolerated. Then came Salofalkzäpfchen, that did not work. From the darmaligen general then Salofalkeinläufe get. Initially slightly better, during a spurt and later incompatibility, can not hold, terrible burning as well as the suppositories, increased urge to run to the toilet. Then Clversal came in the form of white granules, three times a day. The dose was insufficient to bring the colitis to a daily level. Soon after, Pentasa Xtend 2g followed three times a day. Soon, improvement was always associated with side effects (increased bowel activity and laxity, as well as nausea and lack of apetite). An attempt was made to reduce the dose to one or two doses per day. Since I have the dose again erhöt and am a gastroenterologist, told him about it. As a result, I was advised not to change anything in the amount of intake without consulting. In addition, I got prescribed Salofalk 1g rectal foam. Most attempts to hold the foam have failed. I could only hold it in a few cases when the thrust was just in a weaker chamfer, but by no means subsided. The relapses are the worst from lunchtime (1-3 times per hour to the toilet) Only when the last grain of Pentasa Xtend is eliminated, the whole calms down. I do not dare then in the evening to take the third dose, but must after getting up to the toilet, which is also the case during the resting phase. I also suffer from a heart disease that is permanently treated with medication. And here comes another problem, during the push that lasts for weeks makes my heart mitlerweile to work properly. Hair loss, poor liver values, not at any price!
