Application of the active substance nitrofurantoin

Nitrofurantoin can be used to treat acute and chronic or recurrent urinary tract infections caused by bacteria.

As a rule, nitrofurantoin is only used if other less risky and effective medicines can not be used (for example because of an intolerance). Also, the drug should not be used for a longer time.

For the following application areas of Nitrofurantoin , in-depth information is available:

  • urinary tract infections

Effect of nitrofurantoin

The mechanism of action of nitrofurantoin is not yet fully understood. It is believed that the active ingredient penetrates into the bacteria and disturbs their protein production there. As a result, the bacteria can no longer grow and no longer multiply. This ultimately leads to the eradication of the pathogens and thus to the complaint and healing of the infection.

    Nitrofurantoin for Urinary tract infection

CAUTION WITH THIS MEDICAMENT !!! Because of frequent urinary tract infections, the urologist prescribed nitrofurantoin as a long-term antibiotic for 6 weeks. After 2 tablets on the 1st day, I got a fever and came to the hospital one day later with kidney pelvic inflammation, the next day showed severe shortness of breath and an outpouring in the pleural space. As the hospital switched to another antibiotic, improvement was seen within a week. I needed four weeks to work. After 2 weeks I had again a severe urinary tract infection and received again nitrofurantione. The following night, I got fever and pain while breathing. Re-hospitalization with respiratory distress and tissue changes in the lungs. Discharge after one week (antibiotic therapy and cystomyacin) with unchanged inflamed bladder (reflection) with ciprofloxacin u. Cystomyacin for further treatment for a period of 2 weeks. 5 days after discontinuation again urinary tract infection and again nitrofurantoin. Fever, shortness of breath, pain in breathing a few hours after the first intake. It became clear to me that the problems had to be related to nitrofurantoin. The family doctor and urologist considered it unlikely. 5 days hospitalization, there confirmed me the chief physician after I had pointed several times to my suspicion that it could be quite. Later, my urologist revised his testimony and supported my theory. Meanwhile, I have been treated by a naturopath and it works better. Since August, I have been able to work for a full three weeks, because no doctor saw the connections between the drug and my symptoms, even though my sulfonamide allergy was noted in all the files and the medical history.

The medication is almost always fast and reliable. However, side effects such as headache, nausea (short after taking) and diarrhea occur. which of course is not very pleasant. Initially, I had the dose 100 mg, have now halved, side effects have remained the same.

    Nitrofurantoin for Urinary tract infection

I am currently in Africa and now have my second bladder infection here and in my life. The doctor immediately gave me this medicine, pointing out that many patients get unpleasant side effects. That scared me off right away, because I do not think so much of those chemical nonsense anyway, but then bought and taken them. The first three tablets were without side effects. Then, some time after the evening intake, I felt sick. After taking the sixth tablet I got diarrhea.

    Nitrofurantoin for Cystitis

After kidney removal for advanced renal cell carcinoma, nitrofurantoin retard was prescribed to me by the urologist as a permanent medication. There was no information about possible side effects, the drug was effective insofar as it protected my remaining kidney from infection. After about 3 years, the RöA thorax revealed suspicion of lung metastases, but biopsies did not confirm this diagnosis. Instead, I have lung fibrosis, probably caused by the drug Furantoin. The pulmonologist was appalled by the long-standing prescription, which was questioned by nobody, not even the family doctor. After 12 months of treatment with cortisone and of course immediate discontinuation of the drug, I’m now in a position to be minor !!! To cope with burdens. In the long run, taking Furantoin Retard has done much more harm to me than cancer, and that’s curious, is not it? I can only warn everyone before taking the drug.

I take Nitrofurantoin each time after intercourse, so I do not get cystitis and even if I have one again. I tolerate the drug very well – so far (after about 4 years of use) have no side effects at all.

Nitrofurantoin for Urinary tract infection; Cystitis

I have problems with urinary tract infections for years and have already tried a lot. I had to take antibiotics again and again and have them tolerated. I think that must also be written, because the experiences I have read here are not exactly motivating them and disturbing for many, so my positive statement, because not all respond the same, I had no side effects with these antiobiotics. To be honest, I’ve never heard from anyone that he has as many side effects as described here. Maybe you should not always read the instruction leaflet down to the last detail, because it unsettles many and some people literally wait for the side effect to appear. You can also do a lot in parallel with alternative means, which will lead to success with a lot of patience. For example, as a 2-3 month therapy, I take Wobenezym and Angocin in exchange. I also take Angocin in the acute state and often can also abstain from antibiotics. Angocin is also helpful in the onset of colds.

    Nitrofurantoin for Cystitis

Hello, so after so much criticism, I have to say goodbye to this tablet. I’m glad they exist. ME helped her. After many years repeatedly returning bladder infections, sometimes close to insanity (who knows this constant urination, then with a few droplets, connected with pain like pulling and stinging knows what I mean by madness) I was glad, as after several visits At different urologists finally came to the idea of the tablets. For me they are a blessing. I take them as needed, if I notice something immediately, otherwise now and then after intercourse. They always help with me. I had no side effects so far – at least I did not notice anything. Stupid is only that I always need a few strips in stock. This week, my doctor has to and we go on vacation. Which means that I do not know how and where to get them – or the recipe – because they are prescription. Gone stupid. Now try to get the recipe via another doctor. But I have the experience that foreign doctors do not like the personal medication (they do not know, but only believe) not write down so much. Give me that little thumb. In the beach holiday, I tend to like to BE. Have already thought about whether you can get them in Spain – like many other drugs too – over the counter. Anyway. I really can NOT say anything negative about the tablets!

At first I got on well with nitrofurantoin, I was supposed to take a tablet every night so it could work well overnight. Gradually then came the side effects, first only nausea, so I could not sleep for hours, then came to vomiting. I would not recommend this medicine to anyone !!!

    Nitrofurantoin for Cystitis

I have had to take Nitrofurantione (Furadantin) for 14 years. From my birth I suffer from recurrent (chronic) urinary tract infections. The first occurred with me at the age of 8 weeks. After years of treatment with a variety of drug groups showed that my bacteria were resistant to almost all drugs and are still. Except for nitrofurantione. If left untreated, renal pelvic inflammatory disease developed quite rapidly. I have been taking this active ingredient permanently (daily) for 14 years since I was 5 years old. First, I took 100mg 3 times a day. Later, the dose was reduced to 2 times 100mg per day and 50mg per day towards the end of the intake period. Nothing else helped. As soon as I stopped it, the infection returned after 2-3 days. As far as I can tell, it saved my life in a way. However, I have had and still struggle with serious side effects. In addition to the constant nausea that accompanied me as a child, I also had vomiting frequently. I got loss of appetite from nitrofurantone. I also felt tired and beaten off. After prolonged use of the drug, my growth decreased. I have experienced a disturbed growth phase. My little finger e.g. has grown remarkably short (but all limbs are present). The headache developed into a migraine with aura. Tingling sensations and numb limbs also appeared. Furthermore, I had a sensation of heat on my hands. In addition, there was a decrease in the leukocyte count in peripheral blood (leukopenia). This remained even after discontinuation of the drug. Light hair loss also occurred under nitrofurantoin. Joint pain in the knees was also observed. Nitrofurantoin also caused depression. These laid down after discontinuation of the drug. Skin reactions, such as inflamed mucous membranes in the genital area also occurred repeatedly. Today I have an unexplained asthma. In addition to all these not exactly great experiences, it has helped me anyway. I no longer have to take medication permanently and have a good grip on chronic urinary tract infections. However, nitrofurantoin is still the 1st drug of choice in an infection, as my bacteria are still resistant to almost all other drugs.

Dizziness and nausea, coughing, weakness. It was prescribed for me by hospital doctors after a small op and as a prevention against recurring urinary tract infections. My urologist thought it appropriate. But I have asthma and I discussed this with another urologist. He advised I forgot the side effects on the lung tissue from the drug.

    Nitrofurantoin for Urinary tract infection

I take the Furadantin now the 2nd day and have to say that I’m not feeling well with it. After the first tablet, I already had itching on the arms with pustules. During the day I had nausea and was very depressed mood. The itching was now on the whole body and I had temporary respiratory distress and body aches. After the evening tablet, they were again intensified symptoms and I had a very restless night with little sleep. I took another tablet in the morning, hoping it would get better, but unfortunately that was not the case. I am still not well with the drug, but my complaints regarding the urinary tract infection have become much better. I will stop taking the drug today, but I think there are people who can handle it well. That varies from patient to patient.

has always been a lightweight with 46 pounds. So took only one, only half a 100 mg tablet. That 50 mg. Then I thought, I must choke. The following night, I tried to sleep while sitting, but I could not breathe. The cough did not stop, went on until the next afternoon. How can such a thing be allowed?
