About Mirena

Levonorgestrel is used to prevent pregnancy (“pill”, “contraceptive pill”). The active substance is particularly suitable for women who do not want to use estrogen-progestagen combinations for contraception or who are not allowed to take estrogens due to illness. Since the active ingredient does not affect milk production, it can also be used during breastfeeding.

What is the purpose of this ingredient?

  • thicken cervical mucus
  • block male sperm cells to the uterus
  • prevent nesting of a fertilized egg into the uterus
  • Prevent Pregnancy

This is how Levonorgestrel works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of levonorgestrel.
Please also read the information on the drug groups progestins, contraceptives, sex hormones, to which the active ingredient levonorgestrel belongs.

Areas of application of the active substance levonorgestrel

Levonorgestrel is used to prevent pregnancy (“pill”, “contraceptive pill”). The active substance is particularly suitable for women who do not want to use estrogen-progestagen combinations for contraception or who are not allowed to take estrogens due to illness. Since the active ingredient does not affect milk production, it can also be used during breastfeeding.

The prerequisite for reliable contraception is the daily intake of a levonorgestrel-containing tablet at about the same time of the day. If this time is exceeded by more than three hours, the contraceptive effect is no longer guaranteed and on the following 14 days, additional non-hormonal measures to prevent pregnancy necessary. Also, nausea and vomiting as well as severe diarrhea may affect the efficacy of levonorgestrel.

Another form of contraceptive protection is a levonorgestrel-containing intrauterine device. Such an insertion system, also called a spiral, is made of plastic and is inserted into the uterus. It continuously releases small amounts of the active substance over a period of up to five years and prevents pregnancy with high reliability during this time.

Furthermore, a single dose of high dose of the active ingredient can prevent pregnancy within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. The reliability is greater, the less time has passed since sexual intercourse. Since the body is heavily burdened by the high hormone dose, this type of contraception should be limited to emergency situations.

In combination with an estrogen, levonorgestrel is also used to prevent pregnancy (for example, ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel) and, in addition, such combinations can alleviate cycle disturbances and discomfort.

For the following application areas of Levonorgestrel , in-depth information is available:

  • contraception
  • Cycle Disorders and Discomfort

Mode of action of levonorgestrel

Levonorgestrel is an artificially manufactured hormonal drug. It is assigned to the group of progestagens for prevention and can be used as a mini-pill or intrauterine pessary (spiral). The drug thickens the mucus in the cervix, so male sperm can not enter the uterus. Furthermore, it changes the structure of the uterine lining so that a fertilized egg can not implant itself.

High dose levonorgestrel may also prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex (“morning after pill”). In this case, the drug suppresses imminent ovulation and prevents an already fertilized egg from intercalating and growing in the uterine lining. If the implantation has already taken place at the time of ingestion, levonorgestrel can no longer prevent the pregnancy since it does not have an abortive effect.

Mirena for Breast span; Hair loss; Cyst formation

It started very slowly, after about a year. So I got hair loss, cysts, hot flashes, breast tenderness, my days did not come back, my mood was depressed and anxious. In short: I felt like an old menopausal woman (am 21). To completely ignore my sexual desire, she had reached zero. It took me a long time to find out where my problem lies. My gynecologist praised the Mirena before inserting the highest notes, because of side effects free etc. ???? With my problems and stillness, I went to her to describe my complaints. She’s a big fan of my asking if this could be due to Mirena. Your answer, but NO, I would be the first with these complaints that she would never have heard, all other women get along wonderfully. These complaints can not come from the Mirena. After the examination she said that organically everything was fine, maybe it was because of the stress. The body also needs some time to get used to it. So I had my tranquilizer (My course brainwashed) and was a little reassured. Only my complaints did not stop, as if my body would never get used to it. So again to the doctor, this time 2nd opinion, other doctor. He was just like that. No side effects, the greatest thing it ever z.Z. At the examination he discovered a cyst and said he had to treat them additionally with the pill Qlaira, I as a non-expert and still the completely trusting sheep, let him grant and swallowed good the pill. I was getting worse and worse. I rummaged on the internet and found my complaints black and white. I found afflicted women with the same complaints and the worst I ever got was fooled and lied to by my treated doctors. I realized they were trading for the money and not for the people. Mirena is a lucrative merit, since it is best to keep quiet about the side effects. I also found out that Schering issued so-called Rote Handzettel to all specialists, but unfortunately they continue to deny the side effects under Mirena before their patients, or refer you to a psychiatrist. Long live the money and no longer the human being. I have the Mirenanach 3 years in the hospital emergency room removed. Finally, I had severe abdominal pain, inflammation in the urinary tract and again cysts. Be smart about this spiral, question everything. The doctors know the warnings of the industry and they are deliberately kept secret. CHATE YOUR LEGAL GYEGOLOGIST for the suffering of the many young women.

Mirena for Breast span; Aggressiveness; Pain (acute); Hypermenorrhoea

I’ve been using the Mirena 6 weeks ago because of excessive period bleeding. The onset was not so painful, but the three days after that were marked by abdominal pain and I had the feeling that I had a stone in the uterus. Since then, I have chronic bleeding as a medium-strong Mens (not the predicted spotting). Libido rather stronger, but with this bleeding it would not be better. Very aggressive, irritable, contentious. Breast slips: The cup size went from D to E within a few days, no bra fits anymore. Just putting on and taking off a bra is a pain. Touching is definitely not. I’ve had dizzy spells since then – but it can also be due to blood loss. A kind of permanent piercing in the abdomen, whether I’m walking, sitting or lying down. Like with a knitting needle from the inside. I had that from the beginning and unfortunately did not go away. I’ll let this thing go again. Strong period, however, is a walk! By the way: a friend of mine is after 5 years of Mirena already in depression, chronic fatigue syndrome and arthritis, all diseases that allegedly have no causes.

    Mirena for Edema; Acne; Hurt

Hello, have the Mirena now for a quarter of a year, at the beginning, side effects were rather strong (pimples, abdominal pain, swelling of the feet), as me also had predicted the doctor. Since then, the positives are more prevalent: I took the pill for 10 years and would never do it again. Had with the pill massive mood swings, to the point of depression, no desire for sex and otherwise only problems, the only positive was the lower hair growth in the pubic area and the slightly better skin – where the pimples sprouted around the days around as mine best puberty years. With the Mirena I now have not only complete rest from the daily hormone swallowing and a much lower hormone concentration in the body, but also found my old lust for sex again. My hair and nails have become strong and do not break anymore and my wallet says thanks! Buy no more tampons, no more pill, the devouring each year umummen and the psychiatrist I could also unsubscribe. Of course, I have also discovered negative sides of the Mirena, such. the pimples or hair growth on the face. But unlike depression, these problems with good cleansing products and a little wax or sugering can be handled easily and let’s be honest: I did not have stomach ache before the pill during my days too tight. On average: Much better than the pill and much less debilitating and safer than other birth control methods.

After that, I lay there for up to 2 hours and began to ponder .Dementsprechend I was in the morning afterwards. What I had for a whim I can probably imagine everyone …. (my poor family). During the day I hung around with slightly depressed thoughts, etc. It’s all somehow no fun anymore I have two great children and a loving husband. My doctor tried it with different pills and magnesium, did not bring anything. Then his suggestion was the Hormonspirale.Hat certainly took half a year to get it right but I’m totally grateful. Mirena for Dizziness; Pain (back); Fatigue; A headache

Hello, tomorrow it’s been a week since I decided to wear a mirena on the advice of my FÄ and I can only say that I regret this decision every day since then. Surely there are women who tolerate the Mirena very well. They will also seldom have the need for me to share their experiences with safety as those who are as or similar to me. And I clearly belong to the women who see the cause of their illnesses in the HS and would like to get rid of them immediately. I felt the need to get out after 20 years of a pill that was interrupted only by a pregnancy, and I was actually a hormone-free form of contraception. Therefore, I made an appointment with my doctor to let me clarify the possibilities here. In this consultation, she praised me then the benefits of Mirena in such a convincing way that I moved away from my actual plans and finally let me issue a recipe for the Mirena. She described the hormonal influence on the body as so slight that my misgivings in that direction dissipated. The brochure of the manufacturer gave it to me also in the hand and I have the advantages shown, unfortunately, very hasty and much too uncritical can be misleading (even this forum, I have unfortunately only discovered after inserting). At the beginning of the next menstrual period, I immediately had an appointment and immediately drove into practice the next day to be able to count myself among the lucky wearers. I would have left it! Already the insertion has brought me back to the bottom of the facts – it hurt really hard, and I’m sure not worried or sensitive to pain otherwise. Also my cycle made me from the moment considerable problems. When after 5 minutes quite pain in the lower back area occurred, the doctors commented that it could not have been triggered by the Mirena; after all, that would be in the stomach and not in the back. After stabilizing somewhat, I drove home and spent the rest of the day on the sofa, because from the time I got there, I felt increasingly sick and dizzy. So the whole week went into the country. The nausea comes and goes (it reminds me in this form the first two months of my pregnancy) and all the time I feel like I’m on cotton wool. I’m totally exhausted after this week, can not work and drag me through the day. To top it all, in addition to the recurrent pain in the lower back, I also have cardiac arrhythmias, which were already there before, but have also clearly become more violent after insertion. Unfortunately, I did not read all the reviews on this page until after the first two days I still did not feel better and therefore I researched for the first time on side effects in the net and landed here. Some fellow sufferers, unlike me, have come a long way with all the complaints and I’m just sorry. I have come to the conclusion and can only say that I will not do this malaise for half a year. Luckily, my family is really great. My husband is particularly sorry – he has finally urged me after the past weekend to get an appointment with another doctor and let me withdraw from it if necessary HS. The costs are secondary to my well-being. This helps me totally and I am also aware that not every woman – especially with regard to the costs – can behave in their decision accordingly and wants. I will go on Friday and assume that my episode Mirena will then be finished. This comforts me through the extremely noticeable nausea even in this moment. All in all, it can only be said that the Mirena is an expensive experiment and one can only advise everyone to first think more about considering alternatives and not just inform oneself.

    Mirena for Sweat; Pain (acute)

The side effects came slowly. I noticed it just before the end of the wearing time. I had chest pain and got breathlessness in between. It felt like a heart attack. Heartburn was also added. It should come from the chest pain first. The shortness of breath was attributed to stress. Until I saw here on the net the complaints that other women had. I then went to my gynecologist. He said it could be that the hormones have subsided and the spiral must be changed. But I insisted that she be removed and I did not want a new one (that was in July, she had to leave in December anyway). He did that too. One day later my breathlessness disappeared. After a week my legs did not hurt so much anymore. I had problems getting up again when I got up. I always had to take a few steps to be able to walk without pain. The two varicose veins in the legs are almost invisible. They were very fat before. Then I remembered that last summer I had a phlebitis, which I now synonymous on the spiral push. I also talked to my gynecologist about it last year. The said it can not be that it comes from the spiral. Thankfully my gynecologist was not there on my last visit. It was only the representation. Conclusion: never again this spiral I feel like new since she is away.

Mirena for Sweat; Cyst formation; Libido disorders; Overweight

3.5 years ago, 8 weeks after the birth of my son, I had the Mirena Spiral inserted because I definitely did not want to get pregnant again quickly and the hormone spiral was called a very safe contraceptive without the side effects of the copper spiral or the pill , I was really happy with the spiral until a few months ago. Although I still have my period, but not very strong and absolutely regular. That I am sexually absulut on the zero point, I have pushed on overwork, stress, problems etc. Lately, however, I have increasingly suffered from night sweating, weight gain and cysts. This, as my gynecologist once told me, could well come from the spiral, but that was at a time when not every 6 weeks such a monster went off in hellish pain. After I have already given an appointment for the removal (in 3 weeks) since we now want a second child, I’ve dealt with the possible side effects here on the net and have repeatedly come across the same experiences on different pages that coincide with my symptoms. I’m not a doctor, and I’ve pushed all those hormone stories always on my 2 years ago removed thyroid. The values are always in the frame. In my opinion, the causative factor is apparently really the spiral, and hope (especially my husband :-)) that the side effects after the removal will be!

    Mirena for Thrombosis

I already have my 2nd Mirena – despite minor side effects – I would never give it back …. The 1st Mirena was 5 years in it, without any problems to do in any way. No bleeding, nothing. Then she had to get out and the new one in. Here I had the first problems, because the laying of the spiral had problems. 2 days of pain, but finally everything was okay … Approx. 3 months later, the first abdominal pain started. It took a long time (my gynecologist had meanwhile retired) until a doctor found a cyst that was 3 cm in diameter and presses at full bladder and causes pain. Nevertheless, the Mirena remained – I can not take a pill. Meanwhile, the pain is not so common, if it hurts I know that I have to go to the toilet as soon as possible … I will also put a 3rd Mirena again.

    Mirena for Thrombosis

Hello dear ones, I got the spiral used at just 18 years old, because I got through the pill a leg vein thrombosis. The hormonal spiral was and is for me the only way to safely prevent it. The insertion was uncomfortable, but not particularly painful. The cost was just 10 € prescription fee, as my health insurance paid the contraceptive until the age of 20 and made my doctor treatment free of charge. For 10 €, I have a safe contraception for five years. My period has been regular since and is very weak. Side effects have not occurred to me and I am very satisfied.

    Mirena for Menstrual complaints

I am glad that I am not the only one. When I was used about 2 years ago, the Mirena, I had a huge pleasure with it. I started a new job, had a new husband and my FA thought this contraceptive fits exactly in your new life! Great! , I thought so. I have to say that five years ago I had tried various hormone supplements for contraception (various pills, nuvaring, …) as well as to alleviate my menstrual problems (severe, very painful menstrual period). The same side effects always occurred. And my FA always told me that I’m imagining them all. So I was glad when it said that the hormone spiral only releases hormones locally and the rest of the body is not burdened. I was well prepared with vaginal tablets to soften the cervix. The insertion itself hurt me terribly. It was a strong pain inside that caused nausea – indefinable. For two days I had a dull ache. The spotting bleed quickly and meanwhile I had no mens left. Every day I needed a bag of magnesium, otherwise I had abdominal cramps. Well – it was nice, you did not have to worry about his prevention and the absence of the mens was a nice side effect. The abdominal cramps could be handled very well with magnesium. My side effects occurred slowly. I am always very tired, choppy and moody. In addition, I got back pain, which was accompanied by constant headache. The headache in turn triggered dizziness, visual and concentration disorders. Loss of desire of 120% – I would like that my friend only hugs me and if he comes too close to me, I immediately go goose bumps and feel tense. Terrible, is not it ?! Oh well. I did not associate all of these symptoms with Mirena. Why? Local hormones do not do anything. I had my entire body checked, seeking advice from alternative medicine practitioners, TCM practitioners and physiotherapists. Finally, everyone was at the end of their knowledge. I was healthy, but felt terrible. As if I would miss my life. The last few days everything was much worse than usual – at some point, my friend has expressed the suspicion that he suspected these symptoms behind Mirena. I was dumbfounded, I did not want to believe it. But then I googled and found hundreds of testimonials. Reports from women who have had a similar experience as me. Our decision was quickly fixed – appointment at the FA and out with the killer thing out of my body. Yesterday I had the appointment and when I made my decision, I first had to hear that I would probably suffer from depression. The spiral probably does not have much to do with my condition. I did not give up and now she is out. Short, severe pain – accompanied by nausea. Everything is different today. I’m crazy, just eat chocolate and do not know where I’m missing. Maybe already Hormonentzug? I wish and expect that the next months will be better for me and that I will find my way back to myself. Never again do I leave foreign hormones in my body. That’s for sure. My intention is not to maul Mirena here. No. I know women who are doing well and who are comfortable with her. That’s a good thing – but everyone has to find their own way in this area.

    Mirena for Menstrual complaints

After taking the desirette for two years, I switched to Mirena. The decision was not easy for me, because I read a lot of negative reviews. The insertion took place for me easily and almost painless. Half an hour before laying, I took two Ibu 400s. In the first few hours, my uterus complained easily, but after 24 hours, this very slight pain was almost gone. The first two weeks the uterus has made itself felt lightly, with stupid movements. Within the first week, I realized that I had become human / woman again. I noticed how the desirette got my life under control and I recognized almost all the side effects of the desirette. I am glad to have taken the step to Mirena. Not every woman is the same – for me, the Mirena is currently the perfect contraceptive, as well as my heavy bleeding and menstrual pain are over.

Mirena for Pain (joint); A headache

I’m sooo mad !! This beforehand … Have for 7 months, the Mirena spiral (due to heavy bleeding, iron deficiency). Have hardly any bleeding – but that is the only thing that works. Otherwise I have the following symptoms for three months: – from one day to the other daily joint pain in the fingers – again headaches – strong susceptibility to tension (especially neck area) – permanently cold hands – tiredness – sensitive breasts – 6 kg increased in 6 months ( despite exercise and normal food). Certainly a lot of – water retention in the legs and associated with something – stronger varicose veins I was in the last three months: – once with the gynecologist (The spiral is actually very well tolerated, you are probably exhausted., Working too much, right?) – twice with different family doctors with twice blood findings at intervals of one month: no gout, no rheumatism. Probably finger arthritis, because you can unfortunately do nothing, except ointment lubricate (I was horrified !!! And I was afraid, how to continue!) – 8 times with the massage á 70 euros for the persistent neck pain – and have hours of my life for the independent search on the various complaints spentbecause apparently no doctor can think combined !! That’s just crazy! Since a few days, I suspect and at least since reading the other stories of suffering, I’m sure (ALL, completely SAFE) where all this comes from this Mirena spiral! And I wonder too: how can such a thing be allowed !! Have the gynecologist already spoken to tape, that I want to have an appointment immediately. Am SOOOO SAUER on this WOMAN !!! (Incidentally, I paid 500 euros for the insert Please pay cash and without invoice!). – I will print the testimonials and give them to the FAREWELL. I’m glad if the thing is out and with the heavy bleeding I’m getting better after this horrible experience also better.
