About Minirin

The drug desmopressin is the first choice in the so-called Wasserharnruhr (diabetes insipidus centralis). This is a condition caused by a deficiency of the water-retaining hormone ADH (antidiuretic hormone). The deficiency is manifested by an almost insatiable thirst and constant urination. Desmopressin counteracts both complaints.

What is the purpose of this ingredient?

  • Reduce excessive urination
  • reduce excessive thirst
  • Reduce frequent urination
  • Prevent dehydration due to high water loss during injuries and operations
  • Get to sleep without inducing bedwetting
  • Test kidney urine-concentrating ability
  • Breast Bleeding

This is how Desmopressin works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of Desmopressin.

to which the active ingredient desmopressin belongs.

Application of the active substance desmopressin

The drug desmopressin is the first choice in the so-called Wasserharnruhr (diabetes insipidus centralis). This is a condition caused by a deficiency of the water-retaining hormone ADH (antidiuretic hormone). The deficiency is manifested by an almost insatiable thirst and constant urination. Desmopressin counteracts both complaints.

Furthermore, nocturnal sleep without urination by desmopressin is made possible again. Therefore, it can also be used to treat bedwetting (nocturnal urinary incontinence). Even dehydration due to high water loss in injuries and operations can be prevented with this drug.

Furthermore, desmopressin can treat a congenital bleeding tendency (for example mild hemophilia A) as it shortens the bleeding time.

In addition, desmopressin can be used in medical diagnostics to test how well the kidney is able to concentrate urine.

For the following application areas of Desmopressin , in-depth information is available:

  • urinary incontinence

Mode of action of desmopressin

Desmopressin belongs to the hypothalamic hormones and is mimicked by the body’s own hormone adiuretin (ADH, antidiuretic hormone). Like natural adiuretine, desmopressin promotes the permeability of kidney canals to water. As a result, water from the renal tubules, in which a kind of urine precursor is already flowing, is absorbed back into the body. The urine is thus concentrated on the one hand and on the other clearly reduced in quantity. If there is a lack of adiuretine, the patients suffer from constant urine flow and unremitting thirst. Desmopressin provides for less urinary excretion. The water intake and drinking behavior in patients with ADH deficiency normalizes.

Furthermore, desmopressin promotes haemostasis in the body. The active ingredient releases two of the body’s own substances, which play a fundamental role in blood clotting. It is the so-called factor VIII and the so-called von Willebrand factor. Both are indispensable for blood clotting. If they are available in higher concentrations, they increase blood coagulation and (inner) bleeding is thus quenched. As unwanted Nebenwrikung it can come to blockages of the blood vessels.

In high doses, desmopressin narrows the blood vessels and thereby increases blood pressure, which is an unwanted side effect.

I received Minirin for anticoagulation in the case of von Willebrand syndrome under birth (day 1) and in the puerperium (day 2) in the form of infusions in the delivery room / gynecological / nursing home ward of a university hospital with coagulation outpatient department. I should receive minirin for at least 3 days – every 12 hours. On day 2: After dizziness, nausea, circulatory problems, etc., I suffered a severe cerebral seizure with hyponatremia (too little sodium – too much water in the body). I was unconscious, coma, etc. I had to be transferred to the intensive care unit for 3 days and then stayed in the clinic for 10 days. Due to the seizure, I have strong back problems, pain and restricted mobility – I have been in medical and physiotherapeutic treatment for 18 months. An end is not yet in sight. Attention: Minirin or the drug Desmopressin / DDAVP is also used in bedwetting.

    Minirin for Diabetes insipidus

By my meds I feel better. Diabetes insipidus is already corrosive, because you take a lot of fluids and excreted accordingly a lot. Whereby valuable minerals are excreted. The quality of life has increased a lot. but you have to be careful with the bisphosphonates. Unfortunately, it is now often the case that patients thereby develop pine necrosis. I do not have side effects so far.

    Minirin for Bed wetting

Half a year ago, the pediatrician prescribed minirin for our 10-year-old son because he still wet almost every night. Alarm pants, wake, etc. did not bring anything. After the second night he was dry. In the three months he had taken Minirin, there were three incidents. After 3 months we skipped the tablets – taking them less and less according to a certain pattern. For 6 weeks no more pills and the bed was always dry. Why did nobody give us the tip before?

    Minirin for Bed wetting

Did Minirin give my 11-year-old son because of bedwetting? He has wet almost every night. The bed was almost floating, that’s how much water he left. He slept very deeply and did not wake up. Minirin helped reliably from the 3rd day on. It has gone wrong since the beginning of revenue only 2 times. He has discontinued the drug after 3 months of successful use of the marshal principle – i. the normal dose less and less taken (not the amount reduced).

    Minirin for Diabetes insipidus

Diagnosis in infancy: Genetically indicated diabetes insipidus (Wasserharnruhr). Due to the poor doses of the nasal spray (runny nose, etc.), the residual production of the hormone desmopressin (formerly adjuretin or vasopressin) was greatly reduced. At the beginning of the mediation (6 years of age) urine was necessary every 2-3 hours (with simultaneous hydration). Due to the temporary overdose due to the poor dosability (and depot effect) of the nasal spray (1983 to about 1990 still with tube, later pump spray), the residual production of desmopressin was reduced so much that without medication, urination every 20 to 30 minutes was necessary. Due to the high water intake, even stomach and abdominal pain occurred without medication. A life without medication was thus inconceivable. By means of a four-year successive reduction of the dosage, it was possible with the tablets to achieve urination only once every 1.5 to 2 hours without medication (again with appropriate water supply). Because of this experience, in my opinion a medication of enuresis nocturna with this drug does not make sense. By the way: The dosage was always much lower than indicated in the leaflet !!
