About Keppra

Levetiracetam is used in epilepsy with seizures that affect only part of the brain (partial or partial seizures). These seizures can be limited to the affected part of the brain, but also spread to other parts of the brain.

What is the purpose of this ingredient?

  • treating seizure seizures in single-epileptics
  • treat epilepsy in combination with other antiepileptic drugs

This is how Levetiracetam works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of levetiracetam.
Please also read the information on the drug group antiepileptic drugs,
to which the active ingredient Levetiracetam belongs.

Application of the active substance levetiracetam

Levetiracetam is used in epilepsy with seizures that affect only part of the brain (partial or partial seizures). These seizures can be limited to the affected part of the brain, but also spread to other parts of the brain.

Levetirazetam is only a single agent for patients over 16 years of age.

Along with other antiepileptic drugs, the drug is used in adults, children and infants. In infants, the application is only allowed as a solution. This allows the necessary, very fine dosage. In the form of infusions, levetirazetam can be used in children over the age of four years.

For the following application areas of Levetiracetam , in-depth information is available:

  • epilepsies

How Levetiracetam works

Levetiracetam belongs to the drug group of antiepileptic drugs. How Levetiracetam exerts its effect in the body is still unknown.

Levetiracetam is thought to affect gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), the most important neurotransmitter in the brain.

On the other hand, it has been proven that levetiracetam provides seizure protection in epilepsy without altering basic cellular functions or altering the normal transmission of information between the nerves. In animal studies Levetiracetam can not only interrupt convulsions, but even prevent the emergence of new seizures. Whether Levetiracetam can stop the progression of epilepsy in humans, however, has yet to be explored in further studies.

    Keppra for Astrocytoma; Epilepsy

Illness: Epilepsy as a result of a brain tumor (astrocytoma II) For 3 months I take Keppra. Fatigue was the main side effect during the creep phase, so I’m fine with that. Concentration could be better. The Ausschleichphase of carbammazepine is completed in 2 weeks. Previously, I took 10 years of carbamazepine. The side effects were: fatigue, concentration and speech disorders, loss of libido, forgetfulness and mood reduction. At the end, there was a massive skin irritation (hives).

I can only recommend Keppra. Since I get these pills, I have no more seizures. I had previously received carbamazepine and still had seizures almost daily. Since I take Keppra in combination with lamotrigine I am seizure free. I can not talk about side effects. On the contrary. Finally I am myself again!

    Keppra for Absence; Epilepsy

My daughter only had Topamax (twice dosed) for a year, but then she lost her short-term memory and tipped into working memory (concentration and memory) into the bottomless. She was from the two-way average (high school) within a school year suddenly dislocation risk … u.a. that’s why we switched to Keppra in January. Since then she sleeps a lot and is often tired; but basically she can concentrate better and the short-term memory works better. Let’s see what it looks like in the EEG. May it stop. Dear a teenager who sleeps the puberty, as one who forgets even without alcohol, his name and where he wanted to go …;)

    Keppra for Fatigue

Hello, my daughter is 9 years young and has had seizures since her first year of life (at first it was allegedly called febrile convulsions). Your last seizure has over 90 min. lasted. First, we got the drug Ospolot, but due to the very strong concentration fluctuations, my daughter was switched to Keppra. My problem is that from July 2009 to today, my daughter has gained 6 kg and is rising like a balloon. Is that normal? Can someone give me some tips here?

    Side effects: Increase in weight

    Keppra for Fatigue

There were several side effects with me. I have to say here that I am already 70 years old, and until the age of 68 I still did competitive sport. After taking a big tiredness seized me. I always took Keppra in the evening. In the morning I was well rested but was not tired anymore. I always took 1000mg of Keppra. I take Keppra since January 2011, after my 2nd attack. I had the first attack 18 months earlier, but it is said that it is not a typical seizure. In addition to the fatigue I have not noticed any other side effects. I keep experimenting with Keppra, which of course can be dangerous for me, but I’m old enough, and probably dumb enough to do it.

    Keppra for Depression

Since March 2011, I have switched from Ergenyl, which I have taken 30 years, to Keppra. Since then, I had no more seizure.Sonst about three times a year a grand mal, bes.bei heat and pain. Under Ergenyl, I was tired, now I’m I wake up, can think better, but also often aggressive, which does not correspond to my Naturewll. I also dare to say no, to what my environment reacts with discomfort. Although I have not slept many nights, I did not have a seizure. Sleep deprivation has always led to seizure under ERgenyl. Unfortunately, the aggression and depression are causing me a hard time. Is that the same for someone, and what do you do about it? I’ve already thought about behavioral therapy.

Hello, my daughter (8 years) took Ospolot for a year. Side effects such as hands crunching, lack of concentration, abdominal pain have been constant companions. For about 4 weeks we have switched to the drug Keppra juice. I can not say which of the two medications is better, because side effects such as constant fatigue, sore throat accompany us here.

    Keppra for Epilepsy

I have had epilepsy since I was 9 years old. Unfortunately I am still not set correctly and get about 1-2 seizures per week. It now comes to me the question of whether I may operate. Have an appointment in Bethel soon. Maybe something to do with a vagus nerve stimulator. Side effects of the tablets: 1. Ever since I took the carbamazepine, I have been struggling with forgetfulness. My neurologist told me that it can come from the seizures themselves. 2. In the Keppra, I’ve become quite aggressive at times and am very fast on the palm. 3. In the topiramate, I had a slight tingling in my legs at the beginning. But what has disappeared again.

Under valproic acid I had no side effects that I can attribute to the drug. I was well served and had nothing more to note. Just for the sake of a desire to have a baby, I was prepared for another drug – Keppra, which I did not know before. In the early days, I suffered a lot from fatigue, fatigue, lack of concentration, weakness, memory problems. These side effects have now improved a lot, but continue to exist. Side effects that I have persisted are: irritability, aggression, mood swings, increased depressive phases. Side effects where I do not know if they are due to Keppra: occasional pulsation in the eyelid, at times short twitching in the extremities (finger or leg), irritated throat / throat area
