Propranolol lowers blood pressure in high blood pressure and coronary heart disease.

What is the purpose of this ingredient?

  • Slow heartbeat
  • Lower blood pressure
  • To mitigate the effects of hyperthyroidism on the heart
  • Reduce tremors without known cause
  • Prevent migraine attacks
  • Relieve anxiety
  • Prevent recurrent heart attacks

This is how Propranolol works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of propranolol.
Please also read the information on the drug groups beta-blockers, antihypertensives, to which the drug propranolol belongs.

Applications of the active substance propranolol

Propranolol lowers blood pressure in high blood pressure and coronary heart disease.

The drug slows down and rhythmizes the heartbeats in rapid cardiac arrhythmias. Cardiac arrhythmias triggered by exercise, narcosis or sympathomimetics (a group of nervous system-stimulating drugs) can also be treated with propranolol. In addition, propranolol is used in cardiac conditions with no apparent organic cause, such as hyperkinetic heart syndrome. In addition, by eliminating the risk factor of high blood pressure, the active substance can be used to prevent a renewed myocardial infarction as well as attacks of the heart ganglia (angina pectoris). Propranolol can balance the effects of hyperthyroidism on the heart.

The active substance is used in the preventive treatment of migraine, trembling with no known cause (essential tremor) and anxiety disorders.

For the following application areas of Propranolol , in-depth information is available:

  • migraine
  • Hypertension
  • arrhythmia
  • infarction
  • anxiety disorders
  • hyperthyroidism
  • heart failure
  • Angina pectoris
  • Cardiovascular Disease

Action of Propranolol

Propranolol is a so-called non-selective, fat-soluble beta-blocker that works on both beta-1 and beta-2 receptors (not just the heart). Propranolol binds preferentially at special binding sites (receptors) of the sympathetic fibers of the vegetative nervous system. The active ingredient displaces the body’s own messenger substances from the receptor, which want to exert an activating function. This suppresses this activation.

With beta-1 receptors in the heart, propranolol lowers the number of heart beats (frequency) and reduces cardiac muscle tension. In addition, the transmission of electrical impulses to the conduction system of the heart is slowed down. Thus, the heart is “calmed down” and thus relieved of too high stress activity.

At beta-1 receptors in the kidneys, propranolol cushions the release of the blood pressure enhancing hormone renin. So the blood pressure is lowered.

In blood vessels that have both beta-1 receptors and beta-2 receptors, propranolol causes a narrowing of vessel diameter. As a result, the vessels, which are too dilated in a migraine, again narrows to a normal level.

The way in which propranolol acts in anxiety disorders and trembling without an organic cause has not been proven yet.

Propranolol is absorbed relatively quickly and almost completely from the intestine. However, before it is distributed through the bloodstream in the body and reaches the heart, about two-thirds of the amount of active substance in the liver is broken down (so-called “first-pass effect”). The excretion occurs after metabolism in the liver largely through the kidneys. In case of a liver dysfunction or renal dysfunction, a prolonged effect must therefore be expected and, if necessary, the dosage adjusted.

    Inderal for Tremor

I got Inderal because my blood pressure suddenly rises and then I tremble and have dizzy spells. I have to take the drug until the cause of this sudden onset is found. It is well tolerated, I take half a tablet in the morning and have no problems with fatigue.

    Side effects: No side effects

My experiences were that the pills helped me well with migraine. What is important at the most: take the tablet early enough. Otherwise, maybe she will not do as she should. I did not have any side effects, maybe a little tired sometimes.

    Inderal for Migraine

I tolerated Inderal very well the first few months, no side effects and the migraine attacks have reduced from 4 times a week to once a week. Also, I was able to change from the migraine remedies (Triptane Relpax) to normal painkillers (Dolomo, Tonopan). Unfortunately, after 5 months of taking (40mg / day), I noticed that I run out of hair. Meanwhile, it is so bad that I unfortunately have to sell the drug. Nevertheless, I would recommend it, it helped me a lot because I did not know because of the pain anymore. I hope with the discontinuation of the drug does not recur my severe migraine attacks ..
