  • normalize arousal
  • dampen involuntary movements

This is how Haloperidol works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of haloperidol.

Areas of application of the active substance haloperidol

Haloperidol is used in acute and chronic psychosis associated with delusions, hallucinations, thought disorders and ego disorders. Furthermore, it is given in schizophrenia and mania (pathologically increased moods) both in the acute and chronic stage, as well as to prevent a relapse.

Haloperidol also helps in patients with severe restlessness and disorders associated with uncontrollable muscle twitching and movement (tics).

Also, if no other remedies help, low-dose haloperidol is used to treat vomiting.

For the following application areas of Haloperidol , in-depth information is available:

  • psychosis
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain (strong to very strong)

Mode of action of haloperidol

Haloperidol is one of the typical neuroleptics from the series of butyrophenones. It blocks the binding sites (receptors) for the neurotransmitter dopamine. This reduces the effect of dopamine as a carrier substance of stimuli and relieves the symptoms associated with psychosis.

Haloperidol continues to be anxiolytic and calming. The patients become more balanced and pathological restlessness is alleviated. It also leads to a reduction of delusions, ego and thought disorders as well as to a damping of emotional arousal and emotional tension. Morbidly increased moods and excessive drive increases are also regulated. In addition, haloperidol has a soothing effect.

Seroquel causes very dry mouth, mucous membranes, very unpleasant, can no longer breathe through the nose after taking in the evening. Haldol causes me during the day aggression and hallucinations in the night. Seroquel and Dafalgan taken at the same time within 3 hours has the very unpleasant side effect of restless legs, i. I always have to move in bed so I can stand it anytime, but sleep is out of the question.

Extreme uneasiness. Whether lying, sitting, walking, standing …. I could not keep calm. I found that the worst of all medications I ever took, also because it lasted for hours. And that with a very bad effectiveness (with me)

I walked around in the corridors of the hospital, completely stumbling, and thought that I came from the RLS.Where I read the side effects of the Haldol, I realized a lot. Luckily, after 3 weeks I stopped treatment at my own risk. At home I felt much better.

    Haldol for Psychosis

Haldol, the worst experience I’ve ever had. Could not articulate me because of the extreme cramps. Fortunately, a doctor at the clinic found me in that condition and knew how to interpret my situation correctly. I could not say anything. I have been healthy for many years. Thanks again Dr. med. … thought I had to die.

I was given 20 mg of Haldol because I did not want to be treated for a crisis. After that I felt like a walking corpse and then the next evening after injecting the remedy I suddenly had cramps in the throat, neck and shoulder area and could not hold my head straight anymore and just run up and down but in slow motion. Then I drove to the next emergency room there were the cramps so bad that I got no more air and thought I must suffocate. These side effects were really agonizing, unbearable. Fortunately, I got an antidote sprayed in the emergency room, do not even remember what it meant because even two days later I was not fully receptive, somehow confused. After administration of the antidote, the very painful convulsions were over quickly, but I would like to sue the emergency doctor for these hellish torments.

    Haldol for Psychosis

I initially received Haldol because of acute paranoid schizophrenia in overdose (in a clinic) and do not tolerate this at all (fatigue, photosensitivity, trembling). At the next onset of the disease, the drug was given in lower doses (6 mg) and very well tolerated (slight shaking of the right hand). Haldol was also administered during pregnancy and everything went well and I felt normal.

    Haldol for Psychosis

Another drug that should be banned. In addition to enormous weight gain and libido loss, tormented me stomach and muscle spasms without end and a very bad fatigue, and an uncontrollable tremors. I could only lie on the couch and shiver in front of me. After 4 months, I ended up in the clinic because my condition was no longer sustainable. The time under Haldol was one of the worst of my life.

Under Zyprexa extreme weight gain despite little food, within days by several kilos. Self-alienation. Mentally unstable, white remotely controlled. I’m still working on overweight, although I have not been taking Zyprexa for 1 year. Haldol very quickly took the delusions – with me even in small doses. I feel like normal with it. It makes no change in weight, but with prolonged intake feeling cold, emotional reduced. Have Haldol dripped out drop by drop and would use it again as an emergency medication.

I was found with 2.2 per thousand and responded aggressively to the police, I was then administered an unclear amount of Haldol until today, when I woke up in the intensive care unit, I felt like it is like after a binge drinking so. was then released in the evening in the presence of my mother. After 2-3 hours at home I realized that my head always went to the left, I thought I was embarrassed or something. The cramps were getting worse during the night, the next morning the haunting seemed to be over, but 4-5 minutes after getting up, the spasms started to get worse again. I could not go straight anymore, my neck tilted up so I could barely breathe, then I was brought by the notartzt in the emergency room, the cramps there were always unbearable and then started in the face (eyes, tongue, mouth, jaw) I got an antidote which worked very fast.

Have been prescribed Haldol and Risperdal and discontinued .. With Haldol I got after just one day muscle spasms, involuntary convulsions, at Risperdal only after a few weeks. At Risperdal I noticed a calming effect at the beginning, but it quickly disappeared again. Lyrica is supposed to be the new miracle cure, I do not know. Although I did not have such extreme side effects as with o.gen. felt, but I felt no real improvement in my condition Overall, I’m glad if I have to take anything.

    Haldol for Psychosis

I was picked up from the street in a delirious state, I was in the intensive care unit and constantly talking to non-real people, that is, to the wall. Was brought to psychiatry with these symptoms the next day. The first week I received 30 mg Haldol daily, divided into 3 daily doses. I already have experience with neuroleptics, but none of them had such side effects as Haldol. I spent at least 16 hours a day in bed. When I was awake, I could not move my eyes, just my head. My entire motor skills were very static, a bit like being taken away from life. Then there were howling cramps that sometimes lasted for hours. Also, the diazepam, which I got additionally administered, could not relieve this. I also had pain because of stiff muscles. After the dose was reduced to half after 1 week and I also got Parkopan and magnesium in addition to the Haldol, the side effects were bearable. Finally, the stuff was spilled after 14 days.

    Haldol for Psychosis

Hello, I got haloperidol decanoate due to psychosis, i. the depot form of Haldol. It is injected intramuscularly and then acts over a period of several weeks. Apart from the usual side effect of mental crippling caused by this drug (felt like a zombie), I had tremendous restlessness of the seat, hyperdyskinesia (involuntary movements), and myoclonus (twitching) associated with very high muscle stiffness. I advise everyone to have Haldol injected in its depot form as decanoate, because with any side effects you can not stop the preparation yes and must this to the bitter end, sometimes over a period of up to 3 months (in a syringe of 3 ml). The stuff has a half-life of 3 weeks, with the dopamine receptors occupied for up to 6 months. So if Haldol, then certainly not the depot preparation! In addition, modern atypical neuroleptics are significantly less side effects. Due to mental crippling, W H advises against long-term treatment with Haldol and recommends it only during an acute psychotic or schizophrenic phase until it has subsided, followed by a switch to a modern atypical neuroleptic. In addition, Haldol’s risk of tardive dyskinesia is far too great. (Drug-induced Parkinson’s symptom, which from today’s knowledge is hardly or not to be treated.) What brings you when a psychosis or a schizophrenic impulse subsides, but you have been permanently crippled for it ????????? Note to Editors: This report is not about drug addiction. Neuroleptics do not cause dependency in the classical sense, they have to be dosed down gradually, but this has other biochemical and medical reasons that would be too complex to be discussed at this point.
