Areas of application of the active ingredient amitriptyline

Amitriptyline is prescribed for the treatment of depressive disorders (depression). The active ingredient helps especially with mental health problems, in which a bad mood or fears are in the foreground. It also includes anxiety disorders that also have a negative impact on mood. Because of its calming effect, amitriptyline also helps to combat sleep disorders due to illness and should be taken in the evening.

The active ingredient can also be used for chronic pain, which often has a mental component, within a therapeutic concept. The pain scale that covers amitriptyline ranges from mild to moderately severe pain to severe to very severe pain. For example, headache in migraine attacks and fibromyalgia (musculoskeletal pain) can be treated with amitriptyline.

For the following application areas of Amitriptyline , in-depth information is available:

  • depression
  • Pain (strong to very strong)
  • anxiety disorders

Action of Amitriptyline

Amitriptyline belongs to the active ingredient group of tricyclic antidepressants and also has its mode of action.

All brain nerve reactions are mediated by messengers such as serotonin and norepinephrine. These messenger substances are stored in small vesicles at the nerve endings and are released on excitement of the nerve. In this way they reach other nerves and bind to special binding sites (receptors). The affected nerves then transmit the stimulus signal. Once they have fulfilled their task, the messenger substances are taken back into their storage via special transport systems or degraded by enzymes.

Amitriptyline has a dual effect. Once the active ingredient in the brain occupies different binding sites for messenger substances and thus changes the influence of these messengers on the brain metabolism. Secondly, amitriptyline blocks transport substances that return the messengers serotonin and norepinephrine to their storage sites after signal transmission. As a result, serotonin and norepinephrine remain longer at the site of action and their effectiveness increases. Amitriptyline in this way triggers anxiety and tension states and reverses depressive moods. The soothing effect of amitriptyline usually occurs very quickly, while the mood-improving effect begins after about two weeks of regular use.

Chronic pain often interferes with the processing of pain signals in the brain. The messenger serotonin plays a major role in building a filter for incoming pain signals. By influencing serotonin, amitriptyline can replace the constant use of painkillers. The active ingredient must be taken for pain relief but then regularly over a long period of time.

to Abilify: By and large, I’m better off, have my fears a bit better under control, are no longer in the foreground …. Trembling hands is probably a side effect, go down with the dose and look like it then runs. (Up to now 3x 10 mg .. per day) To Saroten retard 50 mg: I am super with this preparation, helps great. Have had severe depris after the birth of my son. With Saroten it was much better … but the anxiety disorders I had with Saroten (alone) not in control .. Achja 10- 15 kg I’ve certainly taken with Saroten …. that’s a big disadvantage, otherwise I’m satisfied. Both meds together are probably good for me, it is not perfect but I can live with it ….. Nice it would be easy to get away

Side effects: Tremble; Increase in weight

    Elavil for A headache; Migraine

I have long (4 years) against the recommended by my anesthetist Sarotentherapie for the treatment of my tension headache and migraine. If I have already read / heard the word antidepressant, I began to doubt whether that was the right one. In the end, I despaired of my permanent headache and so I got over to starting with Saroten- low doses (10mg at 48 kg body weight), since according to the doctor only a suptile dosage is necessary. After taking 4 months (scheduled to be one year), I can say that the tension headaches are much better and the migraine attacks have become rarer and weaker. I am glad that I was able to reduce my painkiller consumption and only have to resort to the Med in hardships. Initial dry mouth was initially uncomfortable, but gone after 2, 3 weeks.

    Side effects: Constipation; Mouth dryness

    Elavil for Depression

I take 1/3 Saroten retard each evening. For about 4 years I have constant constipation. Bread drink, plum juice cure, sauerkraut juice, senna leaf tea help only conditionally. Despite all means it can take 3 days until a bowel movement is possible again. I want Sar.-ret. but do not miss, because the drug also helps me to sleep. Is there anything comparable without the side effect constipation? Best regards Ingeburg Holderied

Elavil for Borderline; Sleep disorders; Depression

I’ve been taking fluanxole for 5 weeks against strong turf, which is part of my borderline disorder. It also works against my depression. I take 0.5 mg in the evening. As a side effect, I notice that I have an increased appetite for sweets, otherwise my mood is extremely positive and it works. Due to extensive experience with psychotropic drugs, this drug is for me otherwise quite poor in side effects, it even counteracts my nightmares and keeps me at a distance to my thoughts without giving me a feeling of drowsiness. However, I have noticed that lately I am very awkward and stumble constantly or somewhere stumble, whether that is due Fluanxol I can not say. Therefore, until now, the urge to sweets at night (hence weight gain) and eventual coordination (concentration) disorder as a side effect of me to consider. The citalopram I take for 4 years, after I had already increased abundantly before my weight has increased, but I have taken other medications. Otherwise it helped more or less. However, I often have more depressive episodes. In the beginning dizziness and unrest, but that passed. Otherwise well tolerated. With Topamax I had no problems, I got it for mood swings because I was also a migraine sufferer. There were no side effects. Not even the hoped-for weight reduction that it supposedly should have. I had to increase the dosage again and again in order to achieve an effect, but I’m no longer convinced, because I’m now quite unstable, as far as my mood is concerned. In an attempt to drop it, I got spasm attack, which was extremely unpleasant. Saroten is an attempt to treat sleep disorders with an antidepressant. In that respect, unfortunately, it fails with me. My mood is better and it makes me less. However, my appetite is enormous and I am gaining weight again, otherwise I do not notice any side effects.

    Elavil for Fibromyalgia

My pain disappeared completely after 2 days. However, after about 14 days of taking it, I could not sleep anymore, I felt like being upset. In addition, I had Libido loss (orgasm difficulties). My doctor did not believe me, so I did not go anymore. Have the tablets discontinued after 3 weeks. After weaning, I had trouble sleeping for a week, sweats and pain returned. After that, for a long time, I only took tramadol when needed and also tolerated it well. Now I take Saroten, but very low (in the evening 1/4 tablet). I can sleep well and am more rested than before. No fatigue attacks during the day and the pain is almost gone. In addition, I take 1 capsule St. John’s wort in the morning. I have not done that for a very long time, but so far I can handle it well and have no difficulties. Is just a strange feeling to feel rested again. Hope it stays that way.

    Side effects: Libido loss
