  • relieve heart in heart failure

This is how Valsartan works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of valsartan.
Please also read the information on the drug groups AT1 receptor antagonists, antihypertensives, to which the active ingredient valsartan belongs.

Areas of application of the active substance Valsartan

Valsartan is used to treat non-organ hypertension (called essential or primary hypertension).

If ACE inhibitors are not tolerated by the patient, valsartan may also be used to treat heart failure. A combination of valsartan with ACE inhibitors should be reserved for those cases of cardiac insufficiency for which other therapies are out of the question. This form of therapy, however, may only be carried out under the supervision of a specialist and under frequent medical control of kidney function, mineral concentration in the blood and blood pressure

For the following application areas of Valsartan , in-depth information is available:

  • Hypertension
  • heart failure
  • infarction

Effect of Valsartan

Valsartan belongs to the active ingredient group of the AT1 receptor antagonists. The active substance blocks the binding site for the blood pressure-increasing hormone angiotensin II in the vascular muscle cells. As a result, angiotensin II can no longer dock, a contraction of the blood vessels and an increase in blood pressure is avoided.

For most patients, the hypotensive effect begins within two hours of ingestion. The maximum blood pressure reduction occurs after approximately four to six hours and lasts over 24 hours. For longer-term treatment, the optimal blood pressure reduction is usually achieved two to four weeks after the start of treatment and maintained during long-term therapy.

Valsartan is broken down by the liver and kidneys and excreted. Therefore, the attending physician should individually adjust the dose in patients with hepatic and / or renal insufficiency.
