About Concerta

The drug methylphenidate is used in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which is referred to as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children over the age of six years.

What is the purpose of this ingredient?

  • Attention Deficit Disorder in children with ADHD
  • Treat obsessive sleep problems in adults

This is how Methylphenidate works

Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of methylphenidate.
Please also read the information on the drug class alpha-sympathomimetics,
to which the active ingredient methylphenidate belongs.

Application of the active substance methylphenidate

The drug methylphenidate is used in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which is referred to as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children over the age of six years.

The attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder manifests itself through lack of concentration and impulsivity with marked hyperactivity and concomitant symptoms such as increased irritability, ill-humor or aggressiveness, depression and forgetfulness.

ADHD does not cure and persists in approximately 60 percent of those affected into adulthood. Adults with ADHD mainly show restlessness, impatience and inattention. Overactivity may decrease with age due to adaptation, development of the nervous system, and treatment with over-the-counter medications. Often there is an inability to social bonds. Today ADHD is also treated with methyphenidate in adults.

According to recent research, the cause of ADHD is disrupted signaling in the brain. Since ADHD is a very complex clinical picture with very different symptoms, treatment with the active substance methylphenidate can only ever be a therapeutic component within a so-called multimodal treatment plan consisting of several building blocks or ways. With careful dosing by the doctor, however, the administration of methylphenidate has a very decisive positive influence on the main symptoms of the disease. The active ingredient reduces inattention and distractibility as well as impulsivity and hyperactivity.

A second indication of methylphenidate is narcolepsy in adults. This is a disturbance of the sleep-wake rhythm, which is expressed by excessive daytime sleepiness with sudden onset of sleep. The sleep attacks of narcolepsy, sometimes triggered by extreme stress, have nothing to do with lethargy and therefore can not be resolved with a lot of sleep. In addition to the main symptom of the disease other malfunctions such as excitation caused by occurring short-term loss of muscle tension (cataplexy), daydreams (hypnagogic hallucinations), sleep paralysis and disorders of nighttime sleep.

Also, the causes of narcolepsy are not well known. However, it is believed that disruption of the part of the brain responsible for sleep / wake control is responsible for the onset of the disease. Narcolepsy is still not curable. The daytime fatigue can be mitigated by methylphenidate, while cataplexy and sleep paralysis with tricyclic antidepressants and also the disturbed nighttime sleep must be treated separately.

For the following application areas of Methylphenidate , in-depth information is available:

  • ADHD

Mode of action of methylphenidate

Methylphenidate belongs to the group of alpha sympathomimetics with stimulating effects on the brain.

The drug reduces distractibility in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). How exactly this happens is not yet finally understood. There are no fewer than four different explanatory approaches. The neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine, which provide for concentration and categorization of information in the brain, may play a role. Among other things, methylphenidate could prevent too fast uptake of the messenger substances and thus ensure that there is no lack of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. As a result, the brain could better perceive its control functions.

Observable effects of methylphenidate include decreased motor hyperactivity (“Zappelphilipp syndrome”) and decreasing impulsivity in children with ADHD. Due to the improved impulse control tasks can be completed better and the aggressiveness can be mitigated.

It has been proven that methylphenidate increases the activity of a part of the unconscious nervous system, the sympathetic nervous system. This increases the heart rate, the pumping power of the heart and the blood pressure as well as the circulation of the musculature improve. The stimulating effect of methylphenidate on the brain increases the ability to concentrate, the willingness to perform and the willingness to take decisions

    Concerta for Adh syndrome

I have been taking the tablets for 4 years already, at the beginning I had difficulty with the dosage, with me side effects, such as suicidal thoughts, depression, etc. have been on the agenda. Then I adjusted myself, I listened to my body and tried to adjust it, I started with the smallest dose. Now I’m at 36mg and this is my more or less standard dose, because with me it is that my body always adjusts to the dose, then I have to stop for a while (over the holidays) and then again with the least To start the dose. The problem with you as I had, I helped the tablets for some time, set off on vacation and then start again with a lower dose. I hope you get it, because I wish you not, that you also have symptoms such as suicidal thoughts, etc. to get!

Concerta for Depression; Concentration disorders; Adh syndrome

I have been taking a concerta for a few weeks. Before that, I had a very high-dose preparation for depression and ads. Due to my depression and my mental instability, I suffer from severe concentration problems and unfortunately had to discontinue my usual medication as the dose was too high. However, I find that concerta me from the mental is not compensated enough, etc. as my drug before. That was a retard of 30 mg. I also tend to tantrums and emotional outbursts and concerta makes for me very large mood swings!

Currently taking 36 mg. Initially severe weight loss, headache, sweating, which returned to normal after 6 months. Binge eating, increased hyperactivity due to missed medication. Otherwise, the drug is quite well tolerated by my son. Unfortunately, the dose must be increased again and again, since a certain habituation effect occurs.

    Concerta for Adh syndrome

I have read a post in the stand that the one who knows no doctor who is familiar with ADHD in adulthood, that’s why I write! I used to fight daily with my 5 year younger brother and we beat each other’s heads. Even my dad once said he puts us in a room together in the morning, and in the evening he looks to see who survived. It was so extreme with us. I used to wish my brother would not live anymore because he always got what he wanted. And not me. I was really extremely jealous. But thank God. Since we both take Ritalin or Concerta our relationship is much better. Now I love my brother over everything and would not exchange it for anything and no one in the world !!! He is the best brother out there! There are several doctors who are familiar with ADHD in adulthood! Dr. Edmund Noller in Degernau (Ba-Wü) or also Dr. med. Neuhaus (I think from Stuttgart) Noller is also my doctor. It’s just a relief to take this concert. I myself take Concerta 36mg since I am 14. before half a year Ritalin 10mg. Now I am 21 years old. I find it easier to concentrate. I can even listen to music while learning and the learning stays in my head. In the meantime I have got my turn to bring some order to my life. I have a mother who is very neat herself. My friend is too. And meanwhile, I am also starting to be neat. It’s almost scary that it finally works after a long time! I once realized that I eat less than I once set it down. Instead of 1/2 rolls I ate 1 1/2 rolls in the morning. At deposition at the beginning a bit limp and tired, but passed after 1 week. After that, I was just turned on and did not pull myself together and was just myself, with my crazy nature and crazy ticks. But that does not mean that with Concerta the personality is suppressed! For heaven’s sake, no !! With time, you learn to back up and take care of what you are doing. Lg mona

have made very good experience with the drug methylphenidate (chloride), even if the side effects have been expressed very strong (especially Concerta) for me is particularly easy to use at Concerta since it only needs to take morning, not like the paradox a person with bad concentration and high forgetfulness all about 4 hours to set a time at which it should take the tablets against forgetfulness;)

    Concerta for Adh syndrome

My daughter (8 years old) takes Concerta 36 mg. Ritalin retard did not work for us. We are very satisfied with Concerta. We give her in the morning an additional 5 mg Medikinet, as the morning effect is otherwise too low. She is now concentrated, very good at school and sociable with her fellow human beings. The effect lasts about 10 hours. As side effect the loss of appetite is to be mentioned. But that too can be mastered with tricks. My daughter is at a full time school and gets a hot meal there. Since she is totally into hot meals, I also cook a warm meal in the evening. Otherwise, I give her substantial snacks for the school. For example, Nuts, coconut slices etc. (Just for information: It is 130 cm tall and weighs almost 25 kg). Falling in sleep has always been with us. Meanwhile, I got rid of the idea that my child has to sleep at 8 pm. I let them read in the evening until about 20.45 and then is bedtime. Then she usually shows up to me again, but then usually she sleeps.
