About Clarithromycin

Clarithromycin is used in bacterial infections by bacteria susceptible to clarithromycin, including streptococci. These include bacterial inflammations of the respiratory tract and the ear, nose and throat, such as:

  • Bronchial infections such as acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis
  • pneumonia
  • sinusitis and runny nose
  • Oral and pharyngeal infections.
  • Tonsillitis.

Clarithromycin is also used in some skin infections and soft tissue infections. These include

    • Pus (Impetigo)
    • erysipelas
    • Hair follicles (folliculitis) or follicles (boils)
    • Pus (abscesses)
    • wound infections.

In addition, clarithromycin is used when a more suitable antibiotic can no longer be used due to an incompatibility of the drug or the drug class. The same applies if the infection-causing bacteria have become resistant to these active substances. This may be the case with tonsillitis caused by streptococci, but also with moderate skin infections that no longer respond to penicillins. In addition, clarithromycin is used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, a common gastrointestinal bacterium. Here, the drug is administered together with omeprazole and amoxicillin or metronidazole.

Clarithromycin is used preventively in patients suffering from AIDS or other immunodeficiency diseases because of its good activity against mycobacteria (a combination of bacteria and fungi).

Clarithromycin is predominantly used in tablet form, but can also be given parenterally, ie as an injection or infusion, directly into the bloodstream.

Mode of action of clarithromycin

Clarithromycin belongs to the group of macrolide antibiotics. The active ingredient can both inhibit bacteria in their multiplication (bacteriostatic effect) and kill (bactericidal effect). This antibacterial effect of clarithromycin is based on an inhibition of protein production of the pathogens. It is highly effective against a variety of pathogens, both aerobic (air-breathing) and anaerobic (not air-breathing) strains of various groups (gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria).

Clarithromycin is less decomposed by gastric acidity than the older erythromycin. So Clarithromycin can achieve a higher effect at the same dose, although it only half as much bactericidal effect.

    Clarithromycin for Respiratory infections

Immediately after the first dose severe dizziness and up to 3 hours after taking the feeling of vomiting constantly. In addition, immediately after taking a bitter taste on the tongue (try to drown it with tea and sage ointments). After taking the 5 tablet so far I feel no improvement and still have bad sore throat and difficulty swallowing. In addition, I have abdominal cramps and pain in the kidney area and feel totally flabby.

    Clarithromycin for Tonsillitis

The first side effect is a severe headache. I also took aspirin, which was not tolerated with the antibiotic. Take paracetamol now, it works better. In addition there is a strong ear noise, which somehow confuses my sense of weight and makes me stagger around like drunk. Besides, I’m extremely tired. I am now on the 3rd day of my intake and I am wondering how to get through it until the 7th day. An improvement of my condition is somehow not in sight at the moment. Sick by side effects – where should be the meaning?

But I had big problems sleeping at night, more than 3 hours were not there … I got a headache and I was But most annoying I find the noises in the ears-from whistling to rushing everything was there … I hope so much that it will go away again.I will not take it again 🙁

i had ALL side effects! had signs of a cerebral sinus infection and a little coughing. My family doctor prescribed me 1 tablet in the morning and 1 in the evening. This should have been bad. On a Monday evening I took the first tablet. Tuesday – Wednesday I had tremendous rest. On wednesdays I suffered 2 hours of cramps. I’m not pitying, but I really thought I had to die. Every 7 minutes a spasm paired with violent sweats, diarrhea and vomiting despite pain medication !. the next morning everything was normal, 2 hours after taking it I felt so bad that I had to go to the hospital. In addition, an elevated liver value was found there. Never again!

    Clarithromycin for Bronchitis (acute)

In the beginning I was pretty much better, had the worst cough of my 44 year old / young life. The coughing stimulus was now clearly and loud to hear shortly after taking only before falling asleep, not during the day (that was already a relaxation). Now, in retrospect, I realized that last night I was as awake as ever and had a headache for several days (but can also come from a strong cough). I generally sleep well, fast and through. But sleep was out of the question, wide awake: O. This morning on the third day I took the tablet (AB) again and it has probably passed almost an hour, suddenly tachycardia and total inner restlessness, which scared me. Typically, it was Wednesday noon, closed doctor’s office, wanted to ask if I should settle the AB, which I have now decided alone. There is nothing worse for me than palpitations and the associated panic attacks. In addition, I take a blood pressure-lowering remedy by the beginning of the menopause. If everything is not bad enough, you do not feel well well anyway and then you just get those side effects. I have an appointment tomorrow morning anyway with my family doctor, to whom I must unfortunately say that I have discontinued this variety of AB, cough then rather a day longer than to feel these side effects again. Have now drunk a lot, in the hope that these non-influencing side effects reappear, is already bad enough by the menopause and bronchitis. I do not want to take this again !!! I also have that weird taste, so I could stand it alone. Diarrhea, of course, but sometimes does not hurt, you lose weight, the only advantage. After taking it I quickly feel a kind of drowsiness ..

Side effects: Panic attack; Unrest; Palpitations

    Clarithromycin for Tonsillitis

Overall, I have tolerated the drug well over the 5 days. It works relatively quickly, which may also be due to the dosage (500mg). Except for a slight diarrhea after stopping the drug I can report any abnormalities. These mild diarrhea always occur with me, if I have used an antibiotic.

    Side effects: Stuhlerweichung

    Clarithromycin for Bronchitis (acute)

What a hellish stuff! I took the first dose on Tuesday night and did not notice anything yet. For the next morning after taking the second pill: stomach cramps, fluid stool, palpitations and a disgusting taste in the mouth. Dare to doubt that I will endure this …

    Clarithromycin for Helicobacter pylori gastritis

It had to take 7 days, right from the beginning disgusting bitter taste in the mouth (controllable to me sugar-free lollipops, was especially necessary at night), since the 5th day inflammation and blackening of the tongue, severe burning of the tongue tip. The most unpleasant, however, are very severe joint pain in my already damaged right hip, could barely occur or run, always in a flash einschiessende maximum pain, muscle weakness with kinking; I am otherwise in good health and usually tolerate most medications – rarely take anything – and very unpleasant is also the depression that has set in under the intake.
