Clarithromycin is used in bacterial infections by bacteria susceptible to clarithromycin, including streptococci. These include bacterial inflammations of the respiratory tract and the ear, nose and throat, such as:
- Bronchial infections such as acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis
- pneumonia
- sinusitis and runny nose
- Oral and pharyngeal infections.
- Tonsillitis.
Clarithromycin is also used in some skin infections and soft tissue infections. These include
-
- Pus (Impetigo)
- erysipelas
- Hair follicles (folliculitis) or follicles (boils)
- Pus (abscesses)
- wound infections.
In addition, clarithromycin is used when a more suitable antibiotic can no longer be used due to an incompatibility of the drug or the drug class. The same applies if the infection-causing bacteria have become resistant to these active substances. This may be the case with tonsillitis caused by streptococci, but also with moderate skin infections that no longer respond to penicillins. In addition, clarithromycin is used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, a common gastrointestinal bacterium. Here, the drug is administered together with omeprazole and amoxicillin or metronidazole.
Clarithromycin is used preventively in patients suffering from AIDS or other immunodeficiency diseases because of its good activity against mycobacteria (a combination of bacteria and fungi).
Clarithromycin is predominantly used in tablet form, but can also be given parenterally, ie as an injection or infusion, directly into the bloodstream.

Mode of action of clarithromycin
Clarithromycin belongs to the group of macrolide antibiotics. The active ingredient can both inhibit bacteria in their multiplication (bacteriostatic effect) and kill (bactericidal effect). This antibacterial effect of clarithromycin is based on an inhibition of protein production of the pathogens. It is highly effective against a variety of pathogens, both aerobic (air-breathing) and anaerobic (not air-breathing) strains of various groups (gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria).
Clarithromycin is less decomposed by gastric acidity than the older erythromycin. So Clarithromycin can achieve a higher effect at the same dose, although it only half as much bactericidal effect.
Potential Clarithromycin side effects may include:

Clarithromycin for Helicobacter pylori gastritis
The first time I took the two pills (1xAmoxicillin 1000mg + 1xClarithromycin) only once at lunchtime. After about 5 hours I felt weak, I had a fever to 38.4 (after 6-7 hours it was better) and my lymph nodes have gradually become thick. Especially behind the ears they were so swollen that it hurt. In addition, my eyes hurt inside, and that took about 1 week. Unfortunately, it took months until my lymph nodes were okay again. I went to the hospital, did a lot of tests, the doctors said it was not an allergic reaction, because I had no Hautroetungen or something. Should continue with the therapy even the next day. I did not do that. I tried again after two months … unfortunately. The result was bad. There were exactly the same side effects as the first time. Now after a one-year break, I’ll try a different combination. Hope it works…

Clarithromycin for Bronchitis (acute)
I got bronchitis in March and got prescribed this medicine by the doctor. Gradually, I have completely lost my sense of smell, my skin has become dust-dry and my sense of taste is gone, I just taste more of a metallic taste all the time. My noses and oral mucous membranes have completely dried up! Today was at my family doctor (10.4) and have told him that, but he hardly wanted to hear anything of all this. Just got a referral to the ENT doctor and x-ray. I am fully aware that this drug is the cause of these complaints – clarithromycin 500mg fim tablets! My question now is if anyone knows how to get rid of these side effects of this drugI would absolutely NOT recommend this medication because these side effects are unreasonable and I do not know how long they will last! If somebody knows or knows something, then please ask for help, because the poor people only want to make their money with it anyway!

By that time, I had already taken 12 tablets. This is now 1 1/2 weeks ago and I still taste and smell nothing. The wife of the doctor who treated her made the same experience with clarithromycin. The loss of the sense of smell has lasted for 3 years.

After a few days, some things no longer tasted to me. A little later some things smelled different. Disgusting a taste and smell I had never noticed. Unfortunately, it is not gone until today. I can hardly eat fruit. I can not drink any more mineral water, apple juice spritzer, wine or champagne. The shampoo I always take smells disgusting to me. How long does such a side effect last?

Clarithromycin for Difficulties swallowing; Cold
After my wife initially suffered from a flu-like effect on head and neck pain and a strong cough, the symptoms came to my notice a week later; only that my swallowing and speaking difficulties were even more pronounced. Two tablets Clarithromycin HEXAL (one in the morning the second evening) relieved the symptoms on the first day. The drug was taken by both of us for five days. After that we had to realize that the sense of smell and taste had completely disappeared and so far has not returned. If odor and taste return, I would love to tell you. The instruction leaflet did point out possible changes in the sense of taste and smell; If you had warned against odor and loss of taste there, we would never have taken the medicine. (Data about my wife: born: 1937, 172 cm / 70 kg.)
