The active substance interferon beta-1a is used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis to reduce the frequency and severity of disease relapses.
What is the purpose of this ingredient?
- Reduce the frequency of relapses in multiple sclerosis
- Reduce the severity of relapses in multiple sclerosis
- Prevent multiple thrombosis in previous single episode of multiple sclerosis
This is how Interferon beta-1a
works
Below you will learn more about the fields of application and the mode of action of interferon beta-1a.
Please also read the information on the drug groups immune boosting and debilitating agents, interferons, to which the active ingredient interferon beta-1a belongs.
Application of the active substance interferon beta-1a
The active substance interferon beta-1a is used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis to reduce the frequency and severity of disease relapses.
If the course of the disease changes from the relapsing to the progressive development, the active substance should be discontinued.
Some manufacturers also have permission to prevent further relapses if there’s an isolated surge.

Mode of action of interferon beta-1a
Interferon beta-1a is a genetically engineered antibody that belongs to the group of immunologic agents and belongs to the subgroup of interferons. Like all interferons, interferon beta-1a is also produced by animal cells (including human cells) as part of the immune response to infections with viruses and other biological stimuli. Interferons act against viruses, inhibit cell growth (antiproliferative) and strengthen the body’s defense (immune-modulating).
Interferon beta-1a develops its biological activity by attaching to specific binding sites (receptors) on the surface of human cells. This bond initiates an extensive cell response that produces numerous interferon-like compounds. After a single administration of interferon beta-1a, these substances remain detectable in the blood for at least four days to one week.
Whether the effect of interferon beta-1a in multiple sclerosis (MS) is due to the release of the above-mentioned cell products is unknown because the causes of the disease have not been sufficiently investigated. In any case, the administration of the active ingredient has been shown to reduce the course of the disease, which is reflected in the delayed development of the associated disabilities.
In the case of a sporadic MS boost, the administration of interferon beta-1a can significantly reduce the likelihood of a second relapse in the sense of prevention.

of course, after the diagnosis of ms the shock was great. but it did not help. I still did not want to relive another long-term inflammation with blindness on my left eye! So my neuro avonex prescribed me! It was the worst 6 months of my life! after injection into the muscle !!! Two to three hours later, fever, chills and aching limbs occurred. this lasted almost a week and did not get any better with ibu 800 or other stuffmy neuro said that the nw would eventually become less. but it was not like that. I had a big fat cold for almost half a year. then I switched to copaxone due to lack of quality of life. It was one of the best decisions of my life! except for a few hardenings at the injection site no side effects. I feel like born again since then. and since copaxone no new herd more in the brain. for 3 years!!! thanks copa ………..

For eight months I inject Avonex, the side effects such as head, – and body aches and chills start about two hours after injection. Two days after injection, I am weak and weak. Added to this is the feeling of pressure in the chest and heavy breathing.

Avonex for Multiple sclerosis
I’m type 1 diabetic and seemingly react with the blood sugar on interferon side effects. So I switched from Rebif (3x per week) to Avonex (1x per week). The symptoms are now rarer but much stronger: Vicious leg cramps. Very severe flu symptoms (up to 4 days after injection, mitigate only with sufficient acetaminophen / ibuprofen (6-10 tablets per week).) Depression, pressure on the chest and shortness of breath, headache, fatigue.

Avonex for Multiple sclerosis
From the first injection on I had a chest pain, was getting worse after each injection. After the 6th syringe it was so bad (heavy pressure on the chest, severe shortness of breath) that I had to go to the doctor.Evtl.a bronchospastic, have a Get emergency spray. The shivering NW I have with ibuprofen 0.5 hours before and 2 hours after the syringe well under control. What a positive aspect of Avonex is: I do not inject myself, let the doctor do it and finally feel () freed no longer need to inject themselves (Copaxone and Rebif before). Today I got the 7th syringe (7h) and have no Atemnotbeschwerden … happy …

For me, the side effects occurred only after 4-6 hours. In the first 4 applications, I got violent chills, head and limb pain I still have (6 applications) mild fever and a feeling of sickness occurs every time … similar to a flu. Overall, the side effects have quickly receded. An ibu I take only when needed and not right at the application. The next day I feel dull and a little uncomfortable. Therefore, let the next day calm down. I highly recommend the avonex pen. Super easy application and not a big build together 🙂

Avonex for Multiple sclerosis
I have had MS for 3 years and every week I get Avonexx injected into my muscle. After about 3-4 hours then come the side effects. They are cruel for me, despite 3-4 x IBU 600. I just wake up again with 39 degrees Fever and try to sleep. Because of the self I get the drug, I had no boost. That’s why I’ll take it. But every week this injection turns me over. Chills, fever, strong limb jokes. This is unfortunately normal. The next day migraine often comes along and persistent back pain. I always take the syringe out of the fridge in the morning because I tolerate it a bit better at room temperature.
Side effects: Back pain; Fever; Members hurt; Chills
Avonex for Multiple sclerosis
The next day migraines and bad back pain. With ibuprofen 400, the migraines are usually gone.

the drug is injected intramuscularly once a week. (I had to defeat but first my fear of injecting). If you do not want to inject yourself, you can also have this done by the doctor. With ibuprofen, the side effects can be withstood well.

Avonex for Multiple sclerosis
Take Avonex for a good 11 months, the usual side effects are not unknown to me. What has shown with me over time, is a better compatibility of the syringe in the evening (about 20 o’clock syringes and then possibly NW sleep on). Kalppt good. Another tip from me: splash yourself during the week and not on WE. If you work normally the next day, you will not notice the slight tinkling.

Avonex for Multiple sclerosis
After 1.5 years at the end of February this year in the hospital was found that I have MS. The initial diagnosis was a collective name that included diagnostic options ranging from MS, Parkinson’s … to tumors. Berets after MRI with 2 contrast agents, the diagnosis was intervened in 2 ways: 5 tumors or MS. Since the centers of inflammation were in the central brain area, I’m sure everyone can imagine how I felt until the final diagnosis was made. The spinal cord function was performed Friday as the lab had already closed on Thursday. I was in my room for 4 days and prayed that it was please, please MS. On Monday evening, the ward doctor called me the diagnosis. Because from then on I was relieved and above all elated, she said I would ignore the diagnosis and repress MS. That is not how it works. For my relief, the memory of a young man was responsible 5 years before. Half the brain had to remove it because of 3 tumors in the central brain. He survived and half of the brain took over the performance of the entire brain after 6 years of training. I inject myself with Avonex since I’m out of the hospital. Side effects I feel only slightly. At the beginning I should immediately take1 whole IBU 600 after that, but I have already stopped at the second time. Since the 10th time, I’m not taking anything, even doing light weight training the next day. How good Avonex works for me, will show up next year at the MRT.
