Areas of application of the active substance aciclovir

Aciclovir is used in infections with herpes viruses. There are several herpesviruses that cause a variety of diseases. The most well-known representative is the herpes simplex virus type I, the causative agent of the cold sore. But the chickenpox and shingles (herpes zoster) and eye infections caused by herpes viruses and genital herpes are caused by this group of viruses and can be treated with the drug.

Aciclovir is used for the relief of itching and mild to moderate pain in the form of creams mainly for the external treatment of herpes infections of the lips or genitals. For prolonged use, the active substance may prevent the recurrence of severe genital herpes infections.

For eye infections caused by herpes viruses, including conjunctivitis, there are special eye creams and ointments with the active ingredient.

The tablet form and the solution (suspension) for drinking contain higher doses of acyclovir. The 200 milligram tablets are therefore also used for the prevention and treatment of severe recurrent skin and mucous membrane infections with herpes simplex or genital herpes viruses.

A serious skin infection, such as shingles, is treated with acyclovir 400 milligrams or 800 milligrams tablets or infusions. These two forms are also approved to prevent infections with varicella-zoster viruses.

Infections caused by varicella or herpes simplex viruses often affect people with a weakened immune system. The cause of this can be either a congenital or acquired in the course of life immunodeficiency, a so-called secondary immunodeficiency. The latter may occur during immunosuppressive (immune suppressive) therapy after organ transplantation or in cancer treatment with cytostatics). In these patients with an increased risk of infection, the active ingredient can be given as a preventive acyclovir infusion or tablet.

In the treatment of dangerous herpes simplex encephalitis (inflammation of the brain by herpes simplex virus) are also infusion solutions with aciclovir used.

For the following application areas of Aciclovir , in-depth information is available:

  • shingles
  • Cold Sores
  • Herpes on the genitals
  • skin infections
  • Inflammation of the oropharynx
  • Eye infections caused by herpesviruses
  • itching
  • conjunctivitis

Action of acyclovir

Aciclovir belongs to the active ingredient group of herpes and works against herpes viruses by preventing the multiplication of viruses.

The active ingredient is a so-called prodrug (precursor). It is converted into the effective form acyclovir triphosphate only after it has entered a virus by its own enzymes. Simplified, it can be said that the virus produces its own antidote. The resulting acyclovir triphosphate inhibits the one hand, the necessary for the multiplication of the virus enzyme virus DNA polymerase. On the other hand, it is also incorporated into the genome of the virus. The wrong building block leads to the abortion of protein production and thus also the multiplication of herpes simplex viruses and varicella-zoster viruses in the affected body cells. Locally applied acyclovir has a targeted effect on affected parts of the body. Accepted acyclovir in tablet form can prevent the spread of viruses throughout the body. The earlier the application is started, the better the effect.

Aciclovir can also relieve the nerve pain associated with shingles. Which mechanism of action is responsible for this is not yet clear.

    Aciclovir for Shingles

In my recurring herpes zoster infections in the hip area, unfortunately, it is the only alternative at the moment. The drug will help within a day if I take it fast enough. I take acyclovir 400 2 tablets every 6 hours on the first day. After that I’m so groggy that I can not go to work. On the next few days then only 1 tablet every 6 hours, more I can not. Drowsiness, standing next to me, tinnitus, stomach ache, ggl. Diarrhea, just sleeping and no concentration! Have tachycardia sometimes for a short time, but do not know if it comes through the tablets. I hope that there will soon be a breakthrough in herpes virus research. This disease is unbearable.

    Aciclovir for Herpes

I often have recurring lip and nose sores, i. I have herpes in the nose, on the nose and around both lips (looks awful). After a long back and forth, my doctor gave me the drug Aciclovir 200. My doctor told me I should take instead of 2 as indicated 2 tablets daily, which I have done, since I have not read the leaflet in advance. However, I have to say that my discomfort already occurred after a tablet. The fatigue came very fast about 3-4 hours after taking it but that was not all I got dizziness about 6 hours after taking and fainted, I talked even half an hour after I woke up was still confused stuff and knew not where I was even though I was lying on the sofa with my mother. It was just terrifying for me because I never had problems with my circulation and did not know the feeling of helplessness. I would not recommend this drug, because otherwise I live very Geusnd not smoke alcohol and otherwise pay attention to my nutrition and then something …

    Aciclovir for Shingles

I got terrible anxiety with severe depression and extreme headaches like never before in my life. In addition, very strong dizziness with each movement change. The skin also tightens the whole body – but without any visible parts. In addition, I feel inflated like a balloon edema and bladder emptying does not work as usual. After 1 week taking I break off now, although the doctor said I should take it over 14 days. In addition, there is no improvement in terms of the hellish pain.

    Aciclovir for Shingles

Herpes Zoster (shingles on the face) The drug was not in stock in several pharmacies and had to be ordered. The application is of course very simple, with the tabeltates being extremely large and difficult to swallow, I recommend dividing the tablets and taking them directly in two installments. Side effects were: extreme tiredness and a little headache (although I did not respect the doctor’s calm but neglected the sickness certificate and continued to work). It is important to observe the time – I had to get one tablet every 4 hours take, d. H. Setting the alarm clock at night was really the only unpleasant thing about it.
